Marathon Offshore Grand Prix Added to APBA Offshore Circuit; To Feature ‘Stadium Style’ Powerboat Racing

02/16/2002

MIAMI, Feb. 14—A new race, the Marathon (Florida Keys) Grand Prix has been added to the American Power Boat Association’s (APBA) Offshore Circuit for 2002 and the Nick Carter Racing Team is slated make its hometown debut there Friday, May 17, through Sunday, May 19, offshore racing officials announced Thursday at a news conference at the Miami International Boat Show.

Nick Carter, an original member of pop music’s Backstreet Boys, is sponsoring the boat, which is to be driven by father Bob Carter throughout the 2002 APBA Offshore Pro Circuit in the U.S. and Canada. The Carter boat is highly competitive--a proven hull--having set a kilo speed record of more than 130 mph when it was racing under the name Pier 57.

“The Marathon race will mark the renewal of a developing offshore racing tradition,” said Lee Mills, the event’s producer. “Racing debuted in Marathon in 1986, but about 10 years ago, the circuit took Marathon off its list.

“Veteran offshore racers will recall Marathon with great fondness because the water and weather conditions are usually superb and because the town itself supported races so actively,” Mills added. The Carter family makes it's home in Marathon.

Mills, who also produces the annual World Championships held in Key West, Fla., in November, said the course is to utilize ‘Stadium Style’ racing — an innovative format designed to give spectators a good view of the races.

“The Marathon Grand Prix will run adjacent to the old Seven Mile Bridge which will be packed with spectators able to see the entire race.“ Mills said. “Media and medical helicopters that accompany the race, will be virtually on eye-level with the viewers on the bridge, making a truly dramatic scene.”

There are to be two full days of racing, Saturday and Sunday, May 18 and 19 and a round of parties and celebrations starting Friday, May 17.

Race headquarters are to be situated at Hawk’s Cay Resort, with wet pits set for Faro Blanco Marine Resort, Mills said. Dry pits are to be established Florida Keys Marathon Airport.

The 2002 Marathon Offshore Grand Prix races are to coincide with the 20th anniversary of a massive project that rebuilt 37 of the 43 bridges that help comprise the Florida Keys Overseas Highway, including the Seven Mile Bridge linking Marathon with the Lower Keys and Key West.

Mills also noted that eight hours of television time on Fox TV is to be devoted to the Marathon race. The television schedule calls for 84 hours of APBA Offshore programming in 2002.

The APBA Offshore season opener is at Daytona Beach, Fla., April 25-28. Marathon on May 17-19 is the second race on the series and is followed by Cape Cod, Mass., June 7-9; Savannah, Ga., July 3-7; Cleveland, Ohio, July 26-28; Mississauga, Ontario, Aug. 6-8; Atlantic City, N.J., Sept. 20-22; and St. Petersburg, Fla., Oct. 18-20; The World Championships are set for Nov. 18-24 in Key West.
