1999 Year In Review

Dec 28, 1999, 2:40 pm PT

Everyone's entitled to his own opinion. Ask a Rolling Stone reader for the artist of the year, and you'll probably hear "the Backstreet Boys." The musical lads swept the magazine's annual readers' poll, earning honors including Artist of the Year, Band of the Year, Album of the Year, and Single of the Year. More than 11 million people bought the Backstreet Boys Millennium, scoring the band the title of Artist of the Year from the Recording Industry Association of America.

Rage Against the Machine may not have sold nearly as many units, but that didn't stop The Battle of Los Angeles from earning accolades from Rolling Stone and Time. Circus readers say Korn kicks all ass. The folks at Pitchfork Media don't care who's the best, only the worst. They picked the 100 Worst Guitar Solos Ever, slamming Eric Clapton's work on Derek & the Domino's "Let It Rain."

Since everyone is a critic, here's what the critics (and some readers) have to say:
