Interview by Celine Wong, additional words by Colin Kennedy (looks like they are from the fan conference)

With their record breaking tour just finished, the BSB took some time to reflect on life in the biggest band in the world.

As you read this, the five guys known as the BSB will have just started to recover. After 100 sell-out shows playing to a total audience of 2 million (!!!!) the Millennium Tour is finally over! We caught up with a tired and emotional BSB, as they cope with the pressures of life at the top

Subtitle“We’re only Human!”
The BSB are tired. Tired of performing. “It’s tough,” sighs B-Rok, “If you’re a performer and an entertainer, then you always have to entertain people. So, when it’s 5.45am and you’ve been on the bus all night, you throw your hat on and run through the hotel lobby, so you don’t have to deal with the 800 people who are staked out.” He sighs again, “People expect you to be on stage constantly, but sometimes you just want to be alone.”

Kevin agrees. “We’re only human and we’re just like everyone else. But when you go out to have dinner, or when you go to a movie, it’s hard to turn off the ‘Backstreet Boy’ and just be Kevin.”

“I think because they see performers on the outside,” continues AJ, “they think that’s what is on the inside.”

“People are sometimes under to misconception that we’re arrogant or cocky. Like if we don’t come into a place and chat away to everybody. It’s because we’re kind of laidback and shy, but people suddenly think that we have a problem.” So what’s the solution? “You just have to find a balance somehow,” suggest Kev, “you don’t want not to give someone an autograph, but you have to find quiet time for yourself.”

Subtitle:”I Kinda Fell Off Stage!”
Luckily, one place where the boys are definitely not tired of performing is on the stage. However, all this flying-rig malarkey, has not only made the current tour incredibly demanding, it’s given them all plenty of “scary moments”. Howie had one particularly scary moment during a gig in Germany: “There was a part when AJ was hyping the crowd and Nicky didn’t realise that I was right behind and he swung his arm out and I kinda fell off stage!” Oops”

Kevin however, had a much more scary moment. “I lost my pants on stage during the very first show of this tour! We had zippers on the side of them and mine just completely unzipped on both sides,” he smiles. “The crowd enjoyed it though.” (I still haven’t seen a decent photo of this!!-Pamie)

Of course, even days off can be dangerous to your health, especially if you’re into action sports like snowboarding, eh Kev? “I’m doing a lot better now,” Kevin smiles rubbing the shoulder he separated in a snowboard wipe-out in October, “It was very frustrating, performing with a sling on, but when I tried without it, I kinda re-injured it.” He manages a shrug: “It’s just one of those things.”

Subtitle:”There Will Always Be The Five Of Us!”
Even when you’re not falling off the stage or crashing your snowboard, months of touring take their toll. When we talked to BSB, Nick was feeling “pretty sick” but as Howie explained, all of them have had problems to deal with. “There have been so many things to overcome, especially in the last year and a half, just health-wise. B-Rok going through the heart surgery he went through, death in the family, earning the respect of the music industry. Also dealing with the management issues we had recently, there have been a lot of trials and tribulations, but I think they made us stronger as a group.”

So you’re closer now? “I think we’re now the closest we’ve ever been. The five of us, we definitely have each other's backs. We know that people around us may come and go, but there will always be the five of us.” Nick agrees. “I think a lot of the problems that happen in groups are caused when people don’t communicate, and like Howie said, we have a very good friendship with each other and I think that will keep us together.” So you’re not likely to be tempted into solo projects, like say, the Spice Girls? “I think we have individual goals,” explains Nick, “but we’ve come to the realisation that we can help each other achieve those things. I think that’s the best way to stay together.” He smiles, as if anticipation the next question. “There will never be an end to the BSB, that’s my opinion!” Cool!

Subtitle:”I’d Love To Have A Daughter!”
And 100 breathless shows have forced the boys to break a long-standing tradition. “Five of the past seven years we’ve done shows on New Year’s Eve,” explains Brian, “so this year we’re just going to spend time with our families.” Not that they’re taking it easy. “No,” smiles B-Rok, “We have a tour in February and March and then we’re going back into the studio to make a new record.” “Hopefully, you’ll see another album by summertime,” adds Kevin. Is that a promise? “It’s a maybe”

Apart from future albums (“I think it’d be cool to have an album one day just written by us five,” says AJ) the actual millennium (not the bonzer album) has got the boys thinking about life beyond BSB B-Rok says he’d “love to have a daughter,” (Howie laughs that he’ll “need a wife first!”) and Kev has also been planning: “Eventually, I’d just like to have a house somewhere and sit in my basement sutdio and write music for the rest of my life. And have a family and a wife.” Nick however, has different priorities. “I just want to play basketball, hahaha!”
