Not going to see the Backstreet Boys concerts this weekend? You can take comfort in the fact that you're not alone. When two concerts sold out in about an hour total, thousands of disappointed fans were left ticketless.
Then again, maybe you aren't going by choice. Popular though they are, the Boys' appeal isn't universal, and many people don't want to get mixed up in any of the mania this weekend.
Here are suggestions for both camps:
Wish you were there
- Invite a bunch of friends over to watch a BSB concert video. Stand real close together, watch the show through binoculars, scream a lot, and during the slow songs, hold up flashlights no lighters, please. See, it's starting to feel like Rupp already.
- Shop online for Backstreet Boys stuff. (Try http://www3.backstreet.net.) Have your friends crowd around your computer, and it will almost seem like the crush at a souvenir stand.
- Go shopping. Your friends are missing out on some valuable post-Turkey Day shopping time, but you don't have to. And the crowds at the malls will feel a lot like Rupp this weekend.
- Call the local rock radio stations and request Backstreet Boys music. Even though you can't be at the show, you'll be doing your part to support the band, and you'll ruin someone else's day.
Quit playing games with my radio
- Avoid Rupp Arena today and Saturday. Fans plan to take over early today, and there's no chance a University of Kentucky basketball game will break out.
- Stay away from Top 40 radio, specifically WLKT (The Cat). If it's not all Backstreet Boys all the time, it will be pretty close.
- Listen to your Metallica albums to counteract the BSB effect.
- The mall on Sunday is risky. A lot of teen-age girls gave up important holiday shopping time on Friday and/or Saturday for these shows. Sunday, they may be making up for lost time, and you can bet they'll be decked out in their Backstreet Boys garb.
The ticketless smother their tears; the anti-fans cover their ears
