The hot new item at the official Backstreet Boys merchandise Web site, http://www.bsbdirect.com, is a wool varsity jacket that is referred to as ``an investment piece.'' Stocks, mutual funds, 401(k)s and Backstreet Boys stuff. Backstreet paraphernalia is big business. And the Internet is a vast marketplace. There are 35 clothing options (mostly T-shirts), 16 key chains and 15 poster designs among the many items at bsbdirect, the BSB superstore. A search of Yahoo! Shopping revealed 119 Backstreet products at 27 sites. Of keen interest to Lexington fans, particularly ones without tickets to this weekend's shows, is http://www. store.yahoo.com/ tixx/bacboycontic.html, where seats are available for $165 upper arena, $275 lower arena. The tickets originally cost $29.50-$38.50. Most items are a bit more reasonably priced. T-shirts at bsbdirect go for about $20, and most posters are $7. Want something a little different? How about: A sterling silver logo necklace ($37.99); Or a pencil bag ($9.99). Or Backstreet Boys nail tattoos to paint on your nails while you play with your Backstreet Boys yo-yo, which you keep in your Backstreet Boys ``red tin tote,'' which looks a lot like a lunch box. Trouble is, they're all sold out at bsbdirect. So yes, there is a greater testament to this band's popularity than the fact that their likeness is on a yo-yo: people have bought all of them or, should we say, invested in them.
