WHAT: Backstreet Boys By Michael Donahue If you click on http://www.backstreetboys.com/ you can find out interesting facts about the teen heartthrobs.
Whether or not they're wearing cologne, the Backstreet Boys are savoring the sweet smell of success. The group, called the biggest pop music group in the world, ison the road promoting its latest album, "Millennium." The album sold 1,134,000 copies in its first week. It landed No. 1 spots on charts in Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Greece, Holland and Hong Kong among many, many other countries. One thing that makes the album different is that it features songs co-written by the Backstreet Boys. "Backstreet Boys," their first album, has been included in Billboard album chart's Top 20 for nearly two years. Internationally, the album has received gold and platinum awards in 45 countries with more than 28 million albums sold worldwide. The group has scored five Top 10 singles, released a multiplatinum, full-length video and performed on many television programs, including their own pay-per-view concert in 1999. They've also been nominated for a Best New Artist Grammy. They were included in Entertainment Weekly's "Best Entertainers of 1998." They also were among People magazine's "Men We Love" in 1998 and "25 Most Intriguing People of the Year." They were on the cover of Rolling Stone last May. Backstreet Boys began in 1993 in Orlando, Fla. Then high school students McLean and Dorough and junior high student Carter ran into each other at local acting auditions. A mutual friend introduced them to Richardson, who was performing at Disney World. Richardson later recruited his cousin, Littrell. They performed a cappella in the foyers of local record label offices. Within six months, Backstreet Boys became one of Florida's hottest live acts. Jive signed them shortly after the group's then-manager called a record executive from one of their shows and let him hear them. Backstreet Boys released We've Got it Going On in 1995. The song, with the group's R&B-infused pop, took off in England and throughout Europe. I'll Never Break Your Heart, a second single, also became a hit. They completed a second European tour and won the MTV Europe Viewers Choice Award by the end of 1996. They began collaborating on tracks for their U.S. debut album in early 1997. Hits from that album included Quit Playing Games (With My Heart), As Long as You Love Me and Everybody (Backstreet's Back). If you get a chance to a meet a Backstreet Boy, ask Dorough why his favorite subject is math; Richardson about surfing; McLean about playing Dopey in grade school; Nick about his dog, Boo Boo and his cat, Pinky. And ask Littrell if he's still afraid of heights. The group has certainly reached them. --- Michael Donahue can be reached by phone at 529-2797 or E-mail donahue@gomemphis.com
