"Boys give fans what they want, even moms get into the pop groove."

By Marisa Houston

The Bay area got a head start on ringing in the millennium on Thursday night when the Backstreet Boys arrived at the San Jose Arena.

The fab five's "into the Millennium tour: is just back from Europe and has been an instand sell-out in every city it visits. For the Boys' Bay Area stop, many fans- even those who camped out - were not able to snag tickets andn turned to buying from friends and even online auctioning. For instance, fans Lauren Walker, 13, Krista Miller, 13, and Jennifer McNulty, 12, paid $200 each for tickets that retailed for $38.50.

That's what true fans will do and spend to see their Boys. And every fan has her favorite. Before the show began, I asked around and learned the moms appear to have a thing for the Latin lover, Howie D. (D for Dorough), and the tall, dark and handsome Kevin Richardson. The yonger girls were definitely there to see the blond, blue-eyed pretty boy, Nick Carter. And then there were the rest who were taken by the crooner, Brian Littrell, and the tatooed bad boy, A.J. McLean.

After the fans spend hours waiting in line, the doors finally opened and in rushed girls of all ages, eager to find their seats. they were patient enough through opening acts Mandy Moore and the threesome EYC.

Moore, 15, and a new face on the pop scene, was trying just a tad too hard to imitate the reigning pop princess, Britney Spears. She ended her 15-minute set with her debut single, "Candy." Then came EYC, a group of three physically fit guys. They had great energy on stage, but their 30-minute set was not about the music, but about how fast they could take off their clothes. I don't think the mothers in the audience were pleased.

Finally, was time for the Boys.

During the set change, the crowd's boundless enthusiasm was intense enought to keep the wave going to endless chants of "B~S~B" and "Backstreet Boys." Thent he lights dimmed, and the scrams reached a crescendo as the Boys flew out over the crowd on futuristic flying surfboards.

They opened with their latest single, "Larger Than Life," which pleased the crowd to no end. The stage was set up in the round. so no matter were you , the Boys song to you. they continued with songs from their latest album, "Millennium," and, of course, they had to throw in the hits from the previous albums.

This tour was different from last summer's fora couple of reasons. Not only has the age range of the audience memebers grown, but the Boys were flanked by 10 hip-hope dancers who kept the stage moving at all times!

Perhaps the most sentimental and meaningful part fo the performance was when they sang "Show Me the Meaning of Being Lonely," which they dedicated to their former producer, Denniz Pop, who recently died of cancer. Other highlights included the group pulling five mother-daughter pairs up on stage while the Boys bellowed out "The Perfect Fan," which Littrell wrote for his mother. That definitely brought tears to the eyes of many moms. The most entertaining portion of the show was when all five Boys were hoisted back up into the air and glownd directly ove the crowd.

Each time the Boys spoke to the crowd, they stirred up another frenzy. As the one fo the world's biggest BSB fans, I know it's the personal touch that we want to see, hear and feel. That's what we love about the Boys- they love their fans.

The Boys came back for two encore performances, capped off by a stunning performance of their first release from "Millennium," "I Want It That Way." Then it was over.

The house lights came on, and the 35,000 fans headed out the door to ready to tell the world about their night, which ended with a jam-packed parking lot and music blastick from cars. Girls were singing BSB songs, and the moms were, too, even if they didn't want to admit it!
