The Backstreet Reaction

Recently, I've "come out of the Backstreet closet". Many of my friends new I liked them, and that I went to a concert last year, but this year I have been making it known how much I like them. The thing that I don't like is this: the Backstreet reaction. Here's an example conversation:

Me: I'm going to a concert this month.
Friend: What concert?
Me: Backstreet Boys.
Friend: Ohhhhh.

It's the crinkled nose, disgusted look and groan that tends to get me a little ticked. I don't like Limp Bizkit, or Kid Rock, or NSYNC (they don't sound as musically mature to me as BSB does), but I don't make such a big deal about it. Some friends give me that look, but say "we all have our tastes". There's also the guy reaction "Why do girls like them so much? I don't understand". It's almost the same thing as "Why do guys like Pro Wrestling?" Except, it's not a pointless, fake, knock people unconscious, barbaric exploit of people. I have to admit, the Boys have a nice look to them, but the music is why I'm a fan.

The media has given the Backstreet Boys such a teeny bopper image, that many people don't want to like them for fear of ridicule. I was one of these people, and I kept my posters and knowledge of them a secret, except to my closest friends. I asked one of my guy friends why he didn't like them, and his response was "They're too girly". As in, they're too girl oriented, people think he's gay if he likes them. That same friend heard me listening to my discman, and asked to listen to Millennium. This proves my point that it's not the music, but the image that causes the Backstreet reaction.

People also come back with "Well, they don't write their own songs", or "They don't play their own instruments". One question about this, "Why can't Kid Rock sing worth crap? Or dance?" (this is my opinion, I'm sorry if it offends anyone.) Then, you try to tell people the Backstreet Boys DO write a lot of songs and CAN play instruments, and what is that reaction? "No, no they can't". No facts to back it up, simply "no". This is all fine, but why do people sing their songs if they say they don't like them. In my writing class we have a student news program come on everyday, and they play songs. At the end of one particular broadcast, they played "I Want It That Way" and the entire class broke out into song.

The Backstreet Boys are here, they're popular, but hardly anyone likes them? It is very frustrating for a fan to defend BSB if the media continues to bash and attack them, and say that they'll be gone in three months. All I have to say is: Keep up the good work Kevin, Howie, AJ, Brian, and Nick, and you'll get the respect you deserve from more people...eventually, but for now, you have mine.

Your Backstreet Friend,

Sara
