Date: Oct 14, 2099 Backstreet Boys fever rages Even before concert, girls go ga-ga over these guys
By Judi Villa Diana Weatherman held the sign high above her head: "Kisses for Kevin," it said. The kisses weren't from her but from her daughter, Whitney. "She says I'm taller," Weatherman explained as the two waited to get into the Backstreet Boys concert. Thousands of girls and their parents crowded America West Arena for Tuesday's concert. Many held up signs professing their love. "I feel like fainting," gushed Sonia Guillen, 16, of Phoenix, who swears she'll marry Howie someday. Girls swooned and shrieked and their mothers recalled their own crushes on the Beatles and the Monkees. Bonnie Lewis drove five hours from White River, hoping to buy scalper tickets for her 11-year-old daughter and a niece. But with $75 in their pockets and scalpers commanding $100 to $125 a ticket, it looked like they might end up at the State Fair instead. Maria Lewis wanted to cry. C.J. Orio, 15, of Phoenix, was one of only a handful of boys in the crowd. Wouldn't it be cool, C.J. said, if all those girls were swooning over him? "We're good fans," said C.J., who came with two guy friends and a couple girls. "They're cool. I like their music, but this is crazy. It's just a couple guys."
