Backstreet Boys sing into the "Millennium"

BY: JADE AMBER DRIVER

Although most people think that the Millennium starts Jan. 1, 2000 - they may be surprised to hear that it is coming as early as May 18, 1999.

The Backstreet Boys' second U.S. release and third European/Canadian release, "Millennium," is due to hit stores May 18 on Jive Records. The first single off of the album, "I Want It That Way," hit the airwaves in mid April and was at number 23 on Billboard after its first week on the charts. Right behind at 22 is their hit "All I Have To Give" from their album "Backstreet Boys" which resides at 40. "With pre-release sales of "Millennium" at almost two million with two months to go, the boys are guaranteed a debut on the Billboard at the #1 position." (Source: Billboard.com)

The video for "I Want It That Way," which was shot at the Los Angeles International Airport, was directed by Wayne Isham who has lent his talent to such videos as 98 Degrees' "The Hardest Thing" and Ricky Martin's "Livin' La Vida Loca." It will premiere on MTV's "Total Request Live" on May 5 at 3:30 p.m.

To promote the album BSB will be launching a worldwide tour. European dates are scheduled for the summer, they will be back in the U.S. for the fall and plan to wrap up with performances in New Zealand and Australia scheduled for early 2000. There are also a number of television appearances lined up for May including "The Rosie O'Donnell Show," "The View," "Saturday Night Live," and of course "TRL." Dates have only been released for the summer leg of the tour but you can keep a watch on tour dates and T.V. appearances listed at www.backstreetboys.com.

Although the Backstreet Boys have not changed their sound completely, this album does differ from their self-titled "Backstreet Boys" in 1997. The speculated second release off of the album, "Show Me the Meaning of Being Lonely," has an unusual Arabian feel to it. Yet songs like "I Want It That Way" and "I Need You Tonight" still have a very "Backstreet" beat to them. It has also been rumored that there will be a bonus track called "I'll Be There For You."

Fans who were discouraged about not being able to attain copies of songs that were only performed during concerts or only included on other versions of albums will be happy to hear that "I Need You Tonight" is simply a renamed version of Nick Carter's solo performance song "Heaven In Your Eyes."

Fans will also be happy to know that the CD version of "I Want It That Way" is different from the radio version. "The CD version has a much clearer meaning than the radio version," said junior Michelle Perkins. That seems to be a good thing since many have commented that the lyrics for the radio version seem to contradict themselves throughout the song. Although "I Want It That Way" is not being commercially released it can be attained free with the purchase of the new video "Homecoming-Live In Orlando."

"Millennium" is the first Backstreet Boys album to be released as one version worldwide. Their first U.S. album "Backstreet Boys," which sold approx. 7.9 million units, was merely a compilation of the two European/Canadian albums "Backstreet Boys" and "Backstreet's Back" which collectively sold approx. 10 million units. "It's both a pleasure and a relief for all of us to finally be on the same page," said Bert Meyer, vice president of Jive Europe.

For this album BSB took a greater role in writing and producing. Brian Littrell co-wrote three songs including "The One," "Larger Than Life," which is a song dedicated to the fans, and "The Perfect Fan," which is dedicated to his mother, Jackie Littrell. Although Brian had already shown his writing talent with his European/Canadian track and concert solo song "That's What She Said," which he co-wrote with Backstreet Band keyboardist Tommy Smith, his cousin Kevin Richardson had one of his songs released to BSB fans for the first time on "Millennium." Richardson helped co-write and produce "Back To Your Heart." As the Backstreet Boys continue their careers, they continue to learn more and are expanding their talents by writing, producing and even learning how to play instruments.

"Analysts say [that] the Backstreet Boys have broken the barrier down in American music. Growing up, and leaving those other "boy bands" in their dust, the Backstreet Boys are on the road to becoming music legends." (Source: Billboard.com)
