A (Popstars) reader's exclusive interview with BSB`s keyboard player Thomas Smith

Popstars reader and boy band beloved Corena Hairs came to us with such a hot scoop we had to rush it into this very issue. CJ`s Backstreet Boys web site is such a cool site on the web that a member of the backstreet band e-mailed her for advice on creating a BSB site. She immediately did a friendly Q&A with this sweet keyboard player, Thomas Smith, and the results follow. Thanks, Thomas and especially to 14 year old Corena for the great inside info.

Popstar!: What's life like on the road with the Backstreet Boys?

Thomas: Very tiring. But fun. You have to remain as healthy as you can. The different money in every country is confusing. It's a life of schedules and fried nerves with some good times sprinkled in. I wouldn't change my job for the world.

Describes the Backstreet Boy's personalities.

AJ's a joker, Howie's the quiet one. Kevin's a perfectionist, Nick is goofy and Brian leads sense of balance that put together makes the Backstreet Boys work as a team.

Do the Boys ever fly family and friends in to see them perform?

Yes, all the time. All their parents have been on the road, plus Brian and Kevin's brothers and Nick and Howie's sisters have all travelled with them.

What do the Boys and the Band do in their spare time?

Mostly sleep when we can, but sometimes there's studio sessions to do, playing in different bars, songs to rehearse or write and then hanging out in general. We like to play video games, too.

What's the best part of being in the Backstreet Band?

To work with some of the most talented people I've ever worked with and the opportunity to travel the world.

How do they decide what songs to sing at a concert?

The Boys decide on the set list. They have to think about time and how may ballads they want to do and solos and stuff like that. After they come up with the list, it gets revised and made into the show you see.

What are some of the funniest things that have happened on the road?

I played the whole show with my zipper down once. Howie fell of the stage once. A flying teddy bear hit Freddie's bass in the middle of a slow song: BOOOIINNNGGGG!!!!! On the last tour, the Boys are "launched" up at the beginning of the show. Well, some crew member got excited and launched Nick too early. He was just out there all by himself. "hi...um...I'm Nick." We had a lot of fireworks and explosions on the last tour. We've all been blown up at some point.

What's one thing that sticks out in your mind about the Backstreet Boys?

That they are still honest. That just floors me.
