ChartTalk Q&A

Hey Nanda!

I read your ChartTalk column faithfully. It's great. Thanks for posting the Backstreet Boys' top 40 hits in Canada; you must have read my mind because I was planning to ask you the peak positions of their singles anyway! But now that you have, a question remains in my mind: Why wasn't "I'll Never Break Your Heart" listed? I would have thought that it had charted; it was one of their bigger hits (it seems as if everybody's heard it) and it was also released TWICE in Canada, in 1996 and 1998. What was its peak position(s) on the chart? By the way, the Boys did a terrific concert in Toronto on Wednesday. I enjoyed myself immensely! Their large Canadian fan base was certainly evident as 55,000 people attended the concert!

Aimee: You must have read MY mind. I wanted to throw in somewhere my experiences regarding the Backstreet Boys' recent Toronto concert but I had no way of doing so, that is, until your letter came along. Yes, I figured that the Boys must have put on a terrific performance at Skydome. That evening, I just happened to be in the area walking from Union Station (for those who don't know nor live in Toronto, bare with me) westward to the CN Tower and I had trouble making my trip. Why? Well, of course, the concert had just ended and thousands of BSB fans, mostly preteen/teen girls were making their way from the concert walking in the opposite direction I was headed. Looking at the crowd, I thought to myself: "These young people are behind all the Backstreet Boys' success stories I constantly write about - the No. 1 debuts, etc." It was an eyeopener, one of those rare moments where everything was put into perspective for me. Now to your question, "I'll Never Break Your Heart" didn't chart in the top 40 of The Hits but did manage to climb all the way to No. 32 on the SoundScan chart on April 20, 1997. It spent two weeks in the top 40 of the SoundScan list.
