The Beatles bounced back to the top of the charts this week with a giant jump in sales, as the Christmas gift-buying season heads into the home stretch.

"Beatles 1," the four-week-old collection of Fab Four singles, had been bumped down to third place last week, behind Backstreet Boys' "Black & Blue" and the "Big Shiny Tunes 5" compilation.

But SoundScan Canada reports that John, Paul, George and Ringo roared back into top spot this week on sales of 81,814 -- compared to 56,898 the previous week.

Normally, major releases enter the chart with their biggest single-week sales, but The Beatles appear to have busted that trend, with the CD actually gaining momentum over the course of its one month on the charts.

Meanwhile, the MuchMusic-sponsored "Big Shiny Tunes 5" held on to second spot with sales of 79,657, followed by another Much tie-in, "Muchdance 2001," with sales of 61,275.

As The Beatles were gathering steam, Backstreet Boys' "Black & Blue" lost a little heat, falling from first place to fourth, with sales dipping from 69,771 to 60,133.

The "Women & Songs" compilation rose two spots to number five (on sales of 27,787), while Limp Bizkit's "Chocolate Starfish And The Hot Dog Flavored Water" held steady at sixth spot with 26,337 copies sold.

Quebecois singer Ginette Reno's "Un Grand Noel D'Amour" fell from fifth to seventh place, while Lenny Krativz's "Greatest Hits" held onto eighth place. The Offspring's "Conspiracy Of One" rose from 10th to ninth, and Britney Spears' "Oops! ... I Did it Again" rose from 13th to 10th place.

The highest chart debut of the week belonged to Rage Against The Machine's covers album, "Renegades," which enters the chart at #13.

The Guess Who's "Running Back Thru Canada," a live CD recorded during the band's recent cross-Canada reunion tour, debuted at #21.
