Two compilation albums targeted at the Christmas gift-giving market made strong chart debuts this week, but that wasn't enough to knock the Backstreet Boys from the top of the Canadian chart.

"Black & Blue," the new album from Backstreet Boys, held on to the number one chart spot for a second week, despite strong new entries from the compilations "Big Shiny Tunes 5" and "Women And Songs 4," according to retail sales data compiled by SoundScan Canada.

"Black & Blue's" second-week sales dropped substantially -- from 156,307 last week to 69,771 this week -- but that was still enough to hold off "Big Shiny Tunes 5". The latter release entered the charts in second place on sales of 68,899, but evidence suggests "BST 5's" numbers will improve as gift-givers grow ever-more frantic during the last-minute shopping rush.

The "Big Shiny" franchise, which benefits from heavy promotion via its tie-in with MuchMusic, remains a popular seasonal seller. "Big Shiny Tunes 2," for example, sold more than 128,000 copies during the 1997 Christmas season. "BST 3" sold more than 112,000 the following year, and climbed to a high of 138,661 during the week of Christmas.

Volume 4 sold 77,167 copies when it was released in November 1999, but actually climbed up to 113,498 copies sold during the week of Christmas, and remained there throughout the holiday season.

Meanwhile, another MuchMusic-branded compilation, "MuchDance 2001," fell to fourth spot this week, on sales of 55,023, during the CD's third week of release.

The latest "Women And Songs" compilation entered the chart in seventh place on sales of 19,960, while the long-dormant Wu-Tang Clan saw its new release, "The W", finish its debut week at number nine, with sales of 18,243.

The Beatles best-of compilation "Beatles 1" dropped to third place, although sales remained strong at 56,898, down only marginally from the record's second-week sales (58,268).

Quebecois icon Ginette Reno's "Un Grand Noel D'Amour climbed to fifth place on sales of 23,818, 23,016 of those sales in Quebec alone.

Rounding out the top 10, Limp Bizkit's "Chocolate Starfish And The Hot Dog Flavoured Water" dropped from fourth to sixth place on sales of 23,108. Lenny Kravitz's "Greatest Hits" fell from #5 to #8 on sales of 19,735, while Offspring's "Conspiracy Of One" dropped from ninth to 10th place on sales of 16,141.
