BACKSTREET'S BACK AT THE TOP: There was very little doubt that the Backstreet Boys' new album, "Black & Blue" would debut at No. 1 on the SoundScan album chart. The big news is that this is the Backstreet Boys' fourth No. 1 album putting them in chart history books as the first act to reach No. 1 with their first four albums. This unprecedented streak started four years ago when their eponymous debut topped the very first SoundScan album chart in October 1996. That was followed by the No. 1 entry of the Florida boy band's second release, "Backstreet's Back" in September 1997. And then in June of last year, "Millennium" debuted on the SoundScan album chart.

-----------------------------------------------

With "Black & Blue" now on top of the albums list and "Shape Of My Heart" at No. 1 on both The Hits and the SoundScan singles charts, the Backstreet Boys become only the second act this year to dominate all three charts simultaneously. The only other act in 2000 to achieve this is Madonna whose "Music" was No. 1 on the three charts in October. However, the Backstreet Boys' grip on the charts is even firmer than Madonna's was as "Shape" also holds at No. 1 on yet another national list, The Record's Adult Contemporary Top 75.

SALES FIGURES: If you're wondering whether the Florida boy band breaks the SoundScan one-week sales record, "Black & Blue," which sold 156,307 units in the past seven days, is still behind the first-week tally of Celine Dion's "Let's Talk About Love." In 1997 that record-breaking album debuted at the top with sales of 230,212 copies in one week. In fact, as impressive as the latest album's first-week figures are, they don't even eclipse the Backstreet Boys' own personal best. That distinction still goes to "Millennium," which sold 191,791 copies in its first seven-day period.
