Date: Mar 11, 2000 The Quintet Essentials: What to Expect at the Backstreet Boys' Show Glen Nott - The Spectator Want to know what to expect at the Backstreet Boys concert Tuesday night? Here goes: "Hello, Hamilton." (Scream, screeeeaaaammm, scream, screeeeeaaaam, scream, screeeeaaaam). "Goodnight, Hamilton, we love you." OK, it won't be like that, not outside Copps Coliseum, anyway. Outside the arena, around York and Bay streets, it'll be more like this: "Who needs tickets? You need tickets? You selling tickets? Who needs tickets? You're not an undercover cop, are you?" No, but seriously, what to expect at a Backstreet Boys concert is about two hours' worth of very popular music, slickly performed to careful choreography. You want more? Well, go looking on the World Wide Web for a review of a Backstreet Boys concert, and here's what you'll likely get: * "This concert was full of special effects and surprises. They played to the crowd really well and had sharp choreography." -- Anonymous. * "Cool, worth the money, would go again and again." -- Andrea. * "They can really dance and put on a show." -- Vid. Problem is, everybody knows all that already. It'll be a great show! But here's some stuff you may not be aware of: The men's washroom will be quick-serve, but look for lineups everywhere else -- at the door getting in, T-shirt and souvenir stands on the concourse level, snack concessions, the pay telephones. Get there in decent time if you want to shop, call someone or tinkle. (T-shirts have been selling -- and selling out -- for $25-$30 US at American stops, programs $20 US, and glo-sticks $6 US. How that translates into meek Canadian funds is anyone's guess. Don't expect a direct exchange price. That would put T-shirts at $36-$43, programs around $30, and glo-sticks at $9. Ouch.) Here's an interesting fact -- Backstreet Boys concertgoers are averaging $8 Cdn per person in extras bought at the show. That includes trinkets such as keychains, photos and the like. The math? That's 18,000 fans multiplied by $8 -- that's around $144,000 in key fobs. Once inside the arena proper, you'll see the first signs of something truly special -- a mammoth star-shaped stage sitting at centre ice. Some have described it as a giant electronic crop circle. There will be enormous banks of lights and other strange hanging apparatus. The latter will come into play later. There will be a warm-up act for Tuesday's show, Jungle Brothers, and they will play from 7 to about 8:15 p.m. The Boys come on a 8:30 p.m. Look for a Larger Than Life entry, such as the boys -- A.J., Brian, Howie, Nick and Kevin -- descending from the rafters over the heads of the crowd on boogie boards (mini surf boards) as the Star Wars theme plays and laser lights, fog and bizarre tiki lights swim around the stage. The Backstreet Boys will change costumes every half-hour or less, and will likely open in their familiar blue motocross outfits. We won't go into a song-by-song rundown of how it all goes down, and we won't ruminate over whether these lip-smacking guys are actually lip-syncing ghouls. It's about the show. The Show. At some point, the Backstreet Boys will change into trenchcoats, then black leather outfits. Onstage with the fivesome will be a dressed-in-white six-piece band providing musical accompaniment, plus a team of nine dancers done up in silver mechanic's outfits. Few will notice these people. During the song Quit Playing Games (With My Heart), a special treat comes. The fellows lift off from the stage on guy wires (OK, cute-guy wires) and soar Peter Pan-like over the crowd, perhaps dropping teddy bears, stuffed ones, to the faithful below. There are several other mini-surprises, as well, including a midshow medley done in a high energy Stomp style -- but minus the trash cans. Songs there could include Everybody (Backstreet's Back), We've Got It Going' On, and That's The Way I Like It. The song The Perfect Fan is Brian's tribute to his mom, and the group has gotten into the habit of parading around some mother-daughter couples on stage during the number, a nod, perhaps to their cross-generation appeal. Near the end of the show, expect smart-looking white, grey and salmon coloured zoot suits. The final encore? The Song I Want It That Way. So there you go. In at 7, out at 10:30 p.m. In fact if it was a different time of year, late June, say, the concert would be over by the time the street lights were fully out. Say what you will about the music of the Backstreet Boys, but this will be a Show for the ages.
