Date: Mar 03, 2000 By SHERRY THOMAS Earth calling Lauren Finkelstein and Jill Perkowski: What's it like up there on Cloud Nine? "Unbelievable," said Lauren, one of five girls to be serenaded onstage at Monday night's sold-out Backstreet Boys concert at the Compaq Center. "It was just unreal is what it was." Since kicking off their U.S. tour earlier this year, the Backstreet Boys have been melting young female hearts (and undoubtedly inciting young female envy) by drawing five fans (at random) and their mothers on stage as they sing The Perfect Fan. Sunday afternoon at Gallery Furniture, KRBE (104 FM) gave two Houston teens the chance to prove their perfection and secure one of the serenade slots at Monday night's show. The competition was tough, with more than 40 would-be perfect fans (including a few token boys and one adult) strutting their BSB knowledge with karaoke-style song-and-dance routines, poetry, and even one failed attempt to woo the judges by consuming a dead worm. (Someone had to get that girl some water, quick.) Lauren, not to be missed in her pink leopard cowgirl hat, scored the most points of the day with her energetic BSB testimonial to the tune of Larger Than Life. Jill's skit, which involved wearing a midriff tee with the word "Frick" across it (because BSB members Brian and Nick are like "frick" and "frack"), was the second highest point-stealer. If all had gone according to plan, Lauren would have been on that stage with four strangers (and their mothers) Monday night. But due to a little, er, scoring mix-up, KRBE officials declared both girls winners -- and gave both the chance to see a dream come true. "Lauren and I, we got to know each other, and we were screaming like every few minutes," said Jill Tuesday afternoon, still dazed and dreamy from the experience. "They had us in a little secluded area. We got to stand up and watch the whole thing. We were just standing there and listening -- it was just soooo much fun -- and then when we realized we were about to go on, we started freaking out." Lauren said the seats weren't front row -- they were better. "We were actually in front of the front row seating," she said. "I think our hearts all skipped plenty of beats. We just knew when we heard that one song that we were going to be next on stage. We just couldn't wait ... couldn't wait." Then the moment came. Howie Dorough grabbed Lauren's hand. She and her mother, Marlene Finkelstein, walked on stage in front of 18,000 screaming fans. "We had the first line of the song, so he was serenading us. Then, midway through the song, he took my hand and we walked around the stage. I felt like a star." Jill, meanwhile, was being serenaded by A.J. McLean. When it was time to leave her mother, Kelly Perkowski, behind and walk around the stage, Jill found herself one-on-one with her very own BSB. "He asked me what my name was, and if I'd ever seen the concert before, which I had," she said. "Then, as I was walking off, I said `Thank you,' and he said, `You make me look good up there.' I got off the stage and I couldn't breathe." Lauren said it's definitely something she'll remember for the rest of her life. Then again, who wouldn't? Jill's mom said she had a teen-age crush of her own once. "Barry Manilow," she confessed. "I would have done anything to be sung to by him."
