Review: Backstreet Boys
By ANDY WEIL
Bellaire High School

Being a male teen, I'm genetically prone to hate the Backstreet Boys. But after Monday night's concert at Compaq Center, I can't see how anyone could dislike the group.

The show was amazing. Everything was perfect, including the choreographed dancing, pyrotechnics and the singing of the Backstreet Boys. These boys -- A.J. McLean, Kevin Richardson, Brian Littrell, Howie Dorough and Nick Carter -- know how to entertain.

Two opening acts -- light rappers the Jungle Brothers and girl group Willa -- showed up but were quickly drowned out by audience chants for the Backstreet Boys. When the lights finally went down, every girl in the audience screamed like it was for her life. Here's a clue, they can't hear "We love you Kevin!" All they hear are ear-piercing shrieks.

After the band took center stage, the boys themselves made their big entrance, sailing over the crowd on hoverboards to the Star Wars theme. Wearing space-age cargo pants, they then went to each side of the stage, saluted the crowd and launched directly into Larger Than Life. Anytime one of the Backstreet Boys would wave or make a gesture, the screams would get louder. They owned the audience throughout the show, but especially during this knockout opener.

The rest of the two-hour show featured plenty of costume changes and all the hits. Howie rapped through Get Down (You're the One for Me), which was followed by The One. During that song, a barrage of things, ranging from signs to stuffed animals, were thrown onto the stage. The boys just kept dancing, pretending as if the items weren't there.

For As Long as You Love Me, they threw on trench coats and did a cool dance with steel chairs. Next came Don't Wanna Lose You Now and Quit Playing Games (With My Heart).

After Don't Want You Back, the show slowed down. The Perfect Fan, which Brian wrote and dedicated to his mom, brought five pairs of mother and daughters to the stage. During the soaring ballad, the boys took the daughters for walks around the stage.

Only one Backstreet member, Kevin, remained for the sweet and quiet Back to Your Heart. The rest of the group returned for one of their biggest hits, Everybody (Backstreet's Back). With help from an impressive dance troupe, the boys had a commanding onstage presence. Everybody went directly into We Got it Goin' On, which was followed by That's the Way I Like It.

The group then donned three-piece suits and leaped into Spanish Eyes, which whipped the crowd into another frenzy. Still seated, the boys sang I'll Never Break Your Heart, with one chorus sung in Spanish. Nick seemed to really get into the next song, No One Else Comes Close. He actually got off his stool. The boys threw on pin-striped jackets and hats for All I Have to Give and started dancing again.

Show Me the Meaning of Being Lonely was the final song before the encore. Girls and mothers alike sang along as the boys disappeared from the stage.

After about two minutes of uninterrupted cheers, the boys literally exploded onto the stage for It's Gotta Be You. After the boys introduced the band and the dancers, the song finished and confetti was sprayed all over the crowd.

After a powerful rendition of I Want It That Way, the Backstreet Boys left the stage and the lights came on, leaving the crowd of mostly preteen and teen girls to sing the summer hit all the way to the parking lot.
