Fans have their say: Backstreet Boys get readers' raves Backstreet Boys fans may have quibbled a bit about noise levels and the late start time of Monday's show, but those who e-mailed the Chronicle were unanimous in their enthusiasm for the group.

Excerpts from our readers' raves follow:

I truly enjoyed the theatrical show. The two 10-year-old girls with me seemed a little bored. I think they got tired of waiting for the BSB. When they finally came out, the change of clothes in between was a little longer than it should have been. The audience was so psyched up and then the pause, then psyched up again. It was like a roller-coaster ride. It wasn't a consistent high level of energy. Nevertheless, as a BSB fan myself (I'm 38 years old), I truly enjoyed it!

-- Helen Bomersbach

I thought it was REALLY, REALLY cool! I liked all their songs. The costumes were interesting, and the dancers were great. It met all my expectations and more.

-- Katie S., 9

Hi. I was one of the mommies who took two little girls (ages 3 and 7). It was an awesome show, with all of the bells and whistles you would expect. The girls were going crazy, and the noise level was incomprehensible unless you were there. The BSB performed all of the best songs, old and new, and at one point acted like circus performers (flipping multiple times, dipping low), while flying out into the audience with wires holding them up! But the decibel level was so high (combining the screaming and music volume), it was difficult to hear their voices! My ears were ringing for hours afterward, and I love loud music! My little girl had her fingers in her ears the entire time, so she didn't enjoy it as much as I would have liked -- and she LOVES the BSB! I would definitely pay the high dollars again, but would bring earplugs next time!

-- Macye D. Valdes

The concert was awesome! And the Backstreet Boys are fine! I loved everything, but I really loved just watching them dance and have a good time. They really love entertaining, and it shows. My favorite part was when the boys hung from the cables across the audience. My least favorite was waiting for them to come onstage and when they had to leave. They played for almost two hours, but it seemed like it went by in two minutes.

-- Katie Vollmer, 11

When my 8-year-old daughter looked up at me during their first song and said, "Please tell me that I'm not dreaming!" I knew then that I had done the right thing. Oh, yes, they came through with a terrific show (once it got started). We hardly ever sat down. We rocked till the end. One complaint: I didn't like not seeing all five boys all of the time. The stage was neat, but the setup didn't allow us the privilege of seeing the "whole" show without the use of the cameras. Worth every penny I spent.

-- Susan Hadley

I am a 40-something mother of a 12-year-old girl and 7-year-old boy. Their father and I enjoyed the concert as much as they did. The dancing was unbelievable, and their singing was great. I am a musician and have a keen ear, so I consider myself qualified to judge their musicianship. Serenading mothers and daughters onstage during The Perfect Fan was a nice touch. The BSB seemed to be genuinely nice to each other and the fans. It was LOUD -- my family wore earplugs, and that helped block out the screaming fans. Overall, very high-tech, but polished. My husband said it was one of the very best concerts he has ever been to, and I must agree.

-- Sharon Lieder Atwood

My best friend, Kayla Byfield, and I went, and I was so happy. I loved it. It was so "the bomb." I liked when they were in the air floating, doing tricks. There was nothing I didn't like.

-- Callie Danford

I thought the Backstreet Boys concert was AWESOME!!! I loved the whole show; there really were no bad parts. My favorite number was Larger Than Life because it really got the crowd involved, and I liked the dancing in it. I'm so glad I went to this concert. I'd love to be able to go again tomorrow night. It was so worth the time and money!

-- Heather Boerke, 13

I am the mother of a 9-year-boy who is a big fan of the BSB. He knows all the words to their songs and just about has all the dance moves down, too. We went to see Ricky Martin in San Antonio, and I have to say the BSB concert was probably better than Ricky's, and I really like Ricky. I didn't like the opening acts. I didn't like that we had to wait until 8:40 p.m. to see the BSB. But once the show started, it was breathtaking all the way through.

-- Cathy Sanchez

This concert was soooo worth the wait! When they flew to Quit Playing Games (With My Heart), it was one of the coolest parts.

-- Jesica and Vicky, 10 and 32

My friend Derek and I decided to go because we were sure that the girls-to-guys ratio would be way in our favor. We were not disappointed. Sure, the dance moves were great and the lighting was spectacular, but what the Backstreet Boys do best is bring out the ladies. I'll never forget this BSB concert.

-- Ray Hafner, 17

I entered Compaq Center favoring 'N Sync over Backstreet Boys, but once the concert was over I completely changed my mind! The BSB were on for two hours. Can you believe this? They changed their outfits six times! I basically love the songs that pump up the crowd. But when they slowed things down I was not excited or interested, so I went to buy a souvenir. Overall I enjoyed this concert very much, and I hope they will come back soon.

-- Kate Whitaker, 12

While the Backstreet Boys put on a fantastic show, they also unknowingly provided my daughter and her best friend with special memories to last a lifetime. Not only was this the girls' first concert, they were both celebrating turning 12. They may have been surrounded by thousands of other screaming fans, but for two girls, the BSB concert will always be remembered as a performance tailor-made just to celebrate their birthdays. Thanks, BSB! Happy birthday, Kristine Calvo and Katy Rose!

-- Rob Calvo

My favorite songs were the rock 'n' roll ones, like Larger Than Life. The best singers were Brian and Kevin, and the best musician was the girl who played the saxophone. But sometimes Nick put a towel on his head, and that was funny. Some of the girls were screaming so loud I bet they can't even talk now.

-- Brooke Bretting, 6

As a matter of fact, it was well worth the wait. I managed to get front-row seats from a friend. My daughter Stephanie, who is 9 years old, is still on cloud nine as I write this. We liked the opening with the guys suspended in midair and the pyrotechnics. The dancers were great, along with the band. Since Stephanie is a huge fan of Kevin, she truly enjoyed his performance on the piano. As far as which songs we like best, WE LIKED THEM ALL! The BSB gave it their all and put on an awesome show.

-- Cynthia A. Padilla

We loved the concert on Monday night! The Backstreet Boys really put on a great show! We loved all the dancing and costume changes. Our favorite song was Everybody. We liked the way they danced during that song. Our mom liked As Long As You Love Me. She also liked the chair dancing. It was the best concert we have ever been to. There was nothing about it that we would change. BSB ROCK!

-- Cayla and Christy Wright

My first real concert was in 1971, the Carpenters, and my daughter's first was the Backstreet Boys. Hmm, there is no way to compare the two. She and I will never forget the show. It was something to talk about for many days to come. Go Boys go!

-- Lee and Ashlee Fabling

Was the Backstreet Boys worth the wait? You bet! That concert definitely proved why they are the No. 1 boy band. They showed how extremely talented they all are. They interacted with the crowd, sang beautifully, and the crowd was definitely pumped. My ears are still ringing. Definitely the best show ever. I love them even more now!

-- Amber C.

My aunt and I saw the Backstreet Boys concert. I came all the way from Kansas City, Mo., to see them, and they were without a doubt definitely worth the trip. Spanish Eyes was one of their best songs. I love the way they pour their heart into their music.

This indeed potsviie sports news I was glad to see Ching make the cut, but would have loved Twellman going with him instead of Wolff As a DC supporter from the start, my heart is still with Eddie Pope, so I am thrilled to see he made the cut for one more run
