Sent: Tuesday, January 04, 2000 8:57 PM   Hey, ALL!!!!!!!!!!!

Here's my review of the SMTMOBL video!  This was taken from the MTV showing which, for those International readers, had a little promo before the showing and then the BSB introducing it.

Little Promo they did before the commercial:

*Nick looked soooooo cute!!!!  That little dance he did was adorable.

*I HATED that wifebeater on AJ.  Made him look like he was being starved for about a month!  He was TOO thin!!!!

Intro by the Boys:

*Nick didn't know how to pronounce the director's name!!!!!!!!  HAHAHA!!!! He had to whisper to Howie!!!!  HA!

*Kevin: "It's a pretty deep little video." - awwwwww.  I love how he talks sometimes.

*Nick is like looking around and bored like a little kid!  Very cute!

*AJ was picking his fingers - - his self-confessed bad habit!  Hopefully that will be his new year's resolution.

*Cute little finger wave from Nicky!

Video:

*Should I understand and know the significance of having that person coming out of the ambulance???  Was there any reason for it besides to set up that it was in a hospital which we would've figured out anyway?

*I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE the camera moves in this video.  LOVE THEM!

Brian:

*The camera makes him look almost distorted and strange.  AND sooooo tiny (like when he's starting to walk away from the window in the hospital)!

*OF COURSE it would be about his heart surgery!  DUH!  I'm so stupid.  I was trying forever to figure out what his loneliness would be about and I should've realized.

*He doesn't look good in black and white.  Not at all.

AJ:

*The tear on his face was stupid.  We knew he was upset.  I thought that was cheesy!

*Again, the wifebeater HAS to go.

*Loved the disappearing girl.  Very nice move by the director.

Kevin:

*I knew this part was going to affect me the most (from similiar life experiences I share with Kevin) and it did.

*I LOVED how they came through the window on both this part and Brian's part.

*He looked like the guy from the Maxwell tape commercial (you know, the one who gets blown away from the loud music).

*Did y'all notice the sheet music on the table?  Nice touch.

*FAVORITE part: When he is at the window and looks up and sings: "are you with me now" with shot of his dad in the background. More meaningful than words can say!

Nick:

*UNBELIEVABLY CUTE!

*Pale works for him.  In videos.  Not at award shows.

*Loved when he saved the girl.  I think he WAS saving her from loneliness. That's what his part was showing.  That THEIR music can save others from loneliness.  Maybe.  Dunno, really.  Just my first thought when I watched it.

*Must say again that he looked fine.  Really good.  Loved his look.  LOVED it.

Howie:

*Gets the shaft again in appearance in video.

*I LOVED LOVED LOVVVVED his scene.

*With the girl (sister) running up to him desperate for his help but he can't do anything for her.  Broke me up.

*BUT, what COMPLETELY broke me up with this part was noticing that the girl (sister) runs right by Kevin!!  And Kevin is there the whole time during that scene like he KNOWS what Howie is going through - - loosing someone that you love.  Then when Howie turns around and Kevin is there motioning for him to come was taken by ME to mean that he was telling Howie that he knows what Howie's going through and is here for him and will help him move on and to come with him.  BROKE ME UP!!!!!!

Random Comments:

*I could FEEL Kev's pain when he was walking out of the elevator.

*AJ's little move coming off the bus - - little weird but still meaningful.

*That move made more sense to me when I read the name of the street on the bus marque: Denniz St.

*Brian's: "Tell me WHY can't I BE there where you are" was G-R-E-A-T!!!!!!!!!

*Nick was SOOOOOO into the singing.  He was great in this video.

*Not completely sure of the very ending yet.

*I thought the director did a bang up job.

Overall grade => A-

Me likey!   Tah,
Trish

I waited..let's see, A LONG TIME, to see Show Me The Meaning Of Being Lonely on MTV today. I sat as close as I could to the TV with my VCR set to tape it. It came on and instantly I knew this video was going to get to me. All the scenes were truly sad. It's been their BEST video to date. All the scenes were just amazing. I was about to cry when I seen Brian in that hospital bed. Every single scene almost made me cry. Listening to this song on the album is way different than watching the video. Strong emotions were put into both. The video totally moved me and I can't wait to hear what everyone else thought of the video. Once again, BSB touched me that way no other group could ever. Great work =)

This was such a wonderful video! I was totally enthralled by it. I immediately rewound my videotape and watched it over and over again. I was near tears the whole time. I think the black and white set the mood for the song; which was somber. Which was more thought provoking and heart wrenching? Brian watching himself die? Nick rescuing his lady love from death? Kevin viewing old video footage of his father? (or who represents his father in actuality) AJ on the bus seeing his lost love? Howie in the bar, seeing who I interpreted to be his sister (could be a girlfriend). Does anyone else out there wonder if in the video Nick's girlfriend really did get hit by the bus after the fight but he imagines he saves her? That's how I see it. He plays it over and over in his mind and she doesn't die, he pulls her to the curb and to safety; however, in actuality she did get hit by the bus and die. I have to watch it again! After all, he wouldn't be "lonely" if she didn't die. If anyone else has any opinions or revelations about the video, please e-mail me. I would love to hear them! This is their BEST video ever. They just keep getting better!!!!

Show Me The Meaning Of Being Lonely is by far in my opinion their best video so far. The minute it started I was instantly involved in it. It was a very powerful video with Brian "dying", Kevin and what I think was his father, and just the whole thing. This video personally touched me because I could relate to the whole concept. I lost my grandmother whom I was so close to last March and seeing Brian in the hospital and the monitors going off totally set me into tears as did Kevin's part. This was a great video and the guys did a real nice job on it and I love it. But for "Don't Wanna Lose You Now" maybe that video can be tad bit more happy :)

We saw the Show Me the Meaning of Being Lonely video earlier and LOVED it! The guys put so much feeling and heart into it! It really shows how much they have struggled these past couple of years. When you look at this new video compared to IWITW even then it shows growth for each of the guys both as individuals and as a group. We think they deserve to be at #1 on TRL all 65 days! Let's get the video to debut at #1 and keep it there!

Wow! The Backstreet Boys have done it again! A totally awesome video! I think it's their best yet! And it's all true! I sat there watching 2 Large for hours waiting to see the new video! Hoping that when I ate I didn't miss it! I couldn't wait to see it! I was freezing in my house hoping that soon I could cuddle by the warm fire! Finally an hour before my New Year (which isn't here yet!) They showed it! I almost cried! It is so serious and has a powerful meaning! With Brian's heart problems to Aj's Girlfriends death! I saw it's the best video of 1999/2000! I give it 10 *'s 20 thumps up! Now I am at the urge of trying to stay happy and not think about the video so I won't cry! In about 45 min I will be celebrating the New year! I know most of you have already done that! But it looks to me that San Diego, California won't have a to great one! IT"S RAINING LIKE CRAZY! And I think I'm gonna cuddle by the fire or maybe go watch it again! Tough decision! Well HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Hi, I must say that I'm a big BSB fan and I was watching every minute of MTV on New Year's Eve in order to make sure that I wouldn't miss the world premiere of their new video, "Show Me The Meaning of Being Lonely." It ended up coming on later than I had expected, but it was DEFINITELY worth the wait. In my opinion, this is their best video.

It's really sad in the beginning when you see Brian looking in on himself in the hospital bed. I heard that it was supposed to represent his heart surgery. Then, when you see AJ in the bus missing a girl (I think she's something like his ex-girlfriend, he CRIES!!!! It's so awful when he imagines her coming into the bus and sitting down in the back. The special effects make this part really dramatic. Later, in Kevin's scene he is watching old movies on an old projector of who I think is his deceased dad. He looks totally heartbroken. :( When you see Nick walking in his raincoat on the dark, foggy, wet streets your heart feels miserable for him. When Howie is in the coffee house and singing his part you see a beautiful lady in red running toward him then she fades away just like AJ's fantasy.

The ending when they all join together in the street and walk toward the sunset is beautiful. I bet this video should rack up some MTV Video Music awards next fall. It's time on TRL should be long at number 1. I just hope I don't get too depressed from seeing it so much. Well, I doubt that will happen when it's as remarkable as SMTMOBL is. Just something I want to say, "Happy New Year Everyone!"

*The Video~

The Backstreet Boys (my favorite cuties) always make great videos, but this video "Show Me the Meaning of Being Lonely" has such a deep meaning to it-something very personal and touching which could easily touch a person's heart like it did mine. The part that probably had the strongest effect on me was the beginning of the video.I didn't even have the slightest clue that the dying guy would end up being Brian and when I realized it was him-I don't know how to describe how I felt, but it was upsetting.Next, there was A.J.'s bus scene.(The bus said "Denniz St"on the top.)I was actually confused about this.Did that chick and him break up or did she die?Oh well.Next there's Kevin. He was watching one of those home movies about this guy who I suppose was his dad who passed away.Next it was Nick's turn.Let me just add that the boy looked fine, but his scene was strange. He was walking down the street(singing of course) and saves this dumb girl from getting run over.I just have one more question and it's for the director,Why so close? You didn't have to make it look like a makeout session was about to begin!Anyways, Howie's next. He's in a cafe drinking coffee and as he turns around a spirit is running towards him which dissolves before it reaches him.The whole video ends with all the guys walking together towards a sunset.

*The effects~

awesome effects, and even the color of the video matched the mood of the song.

*Overall comments~

First I'd like to say, sorry this is so long and like I said, this is a great video. The guys did a great job and they truly showed me the meaning of being lonely.Peace!

I love Backstreet Boys's new video, SMTMOBL! It has to be the best one so far. It shows how they grew up from their first video. In the very beging when they showed Brian looking threw the window and it was him in the bed deing. I was so sad. And then when Kevin was watching clips of him and his farther, I was almost crying. It was such a sad video, but I really enjoyed it and it was the best. I could watch it over and over again! It was great!!!

Hey ppl, Jasmine here, hope you had a great New Years! But lets just get down to business, shall we?  I saw the BSB's brand new video for Show Me The Meaning Of Being Lonely and all I can say is wow!~!  I can tell the boys put a lot of heart into this video which made it instantly one of my favs. They had many references to the challenges they had to overcome these past years.  But for those of you who haven't seen it and want some details...here goes!

It starts out with Brian looking at himself in a hospital bed.  While he's singing, the hospital bed Brian goes in to shock or something and doctors race to give him oxygen.  Now that was a reference to all the stuff he had to go through with his heart. Next, AJ is on a bus (looking fine as ever might I add) and he's looking sadly out the window and crying over a picture of a girl.  Then, to Kevin who is in his apartment all lonely and looking at videos of his dad and him playing.  We all know Kevy suffered the lose of his dad when he was 19.  Next you see Nick singing the second half of the verse while walking down the street. After seeing Kevin get off the elevator, you see Nick again and he saves the girl in AJ's picture from being hit by the Denniz St. bus, (named after there late producer) that AJ is on. Now, we see Howie at a bar and he sees these images of someone running toward him then they disappear.   Kevin comes and he nods for Howie to follow.  AJ gets off his bus. Then they all meet in the s treet and they are walking together and singing and they arrive to this sunny surreal looking place and they just keep walking towards the sun.

Now on to what I think...I love it.  My mother was looking at me like I was crazy because I almost cried.  When I heard the video was going to premiere I was thinking to myself how exactly they can do a video for a song like that...but they pulled it off and it was great!  Keep up the good work BSB and I will love you forever!~! KTBSPA ppls! Jacey wuz here!~!

I have been waiting for this video for weeks now and I can honestly say that I was not disappointed. I was wondering what they could do as a video and I think that this was the best that they have ever done. SMTMOBL is now my favorite BSB video of all time. Not just because I love the song, not just because I am a big BSB fan, but because the video had a lot of meaning behind it and it fit the song perfectly. So to BSB I have to say that you have done and outstanding job and you continue to be #1 in my book.....Jermetria, NY

Well, I was honestly blown away by the boys's new video. I am a huge fan, but I can admit that I was disappointed by Larger Than Life. So, although I love them all the same, I wasn't sure what to expect from the new vid. I just have to say that it surpassed anything I could have imagined. It was soo beautiful, the way it was filmed, the colors used, the images, everything. And our boys!! OMG!!! How hott did they all look? total drool factor in there. So, I just wanted to express to all my fellow Backstreet.netters how proud I am of the boys and how much I loved the video.

We have got to get SMTM to be Number 1 EVERY SINGLE DAY!!!!! lets go for it guys.

KTBSPA! love, Meghann

Review: "Show Me The Meaning Of Being Lonely"

Well, they've done it again. Once more, have the Backstreet Boys proven that they can produce amazing songs and brilliant video to go with them. The Backstreet Boys cleverly premiered yet another wonderful music video on December 31, 1999, the eve of the millennium. "Show Me The Meaning Of Being Lonely", is the third release from the BSB's latest album, Millennium. The video is greatly heartfelt in which it remembers the late Denniz Pop, by titling the bus in the video "DENNIZ ST.". The following is a brief review of each of the Backstreet Boys' performances in "Show Me The Meaning".

Rating Scale:

***** best
**** great, but not the best
*** good, but could be better
** disappointing
* not very good

Review:

Brian: ***** Brian's emotional role in the video depicts his "spirit" watching physicians attempt to save his life in an emergency room. They are unsuccessful, as Brian begans to depart from the hospital. He gives a wonderful performance and sets the solemn mood for the video.

AJ: ***** AJ's part is another very emotional one, while the setting is not as dramatic as Brian's. We find AJ alone on a bus, staring at a picture of who we assume to be his love interest. A close-up reveals a tear run down his face, which almost brought tears to my own eyes. Another excellent performance.

Kevin: ***** Kevin's scene was outstanding. His expresssions conveyed emotions of the song, as well as his own sadness, due to the fact that the scene was a dark room in which Kevin sat alone watching film strips of he and his father when he was a child. His role was great.

Nick: **** In Nick's part, we see him walking down an empty street at night. He sings his solo with feeling, but the scene seems a little less meaningful that the others, although it was still great.

Howie: *** I was slightly disappointed by Howie's part. He performed his solo in the song well, but the setting for his scene, a nearly deserted cafe, just didn't fit into the video like it should've in my opinion. Also, I expected Howie to remeber his sister in his part, but unless there is some hidden reference to her in this scene that escaped my knowledge, he didn't. However, Howie's performance was amazing anyway.

After showing each individual scene, the guys meet up at a bus stop, and began to walk down the darkened street together, singing the chorus. The sun begans to rise as they reach the end of the street, and they walk off into the sunset together. In my opinion, this video was very well-thought and brilliant, as usual. It is sure to become yet another Backstreet hit!

Hey everyone! I just wanted to let you know my thoughts on the TERRIFIC NEW VIDEO SMTMOBL!!! Well it rocked! It was very sad, though. I thought there was 2 VVVEEERRRRRYYYY sad parts:

1. Brian and the heart surgery thing- that must have been very hard for and I am so proud of him for doing that scene.

2. Kevin watching the film with him and his dad (?)- was it really his dad? I think it was. If it was, can you imagine the emotional pain he was going through?! Just remember Kev, WE LOVE YOU!

This video was really deep and it can really tug at your heart. I got chills running up and down my spine watching it. Needless to say, as sad and depressing as the video was the boys were HOTT! Nick saving the girl...... my knight in shining armor. I think Denniz would have loved this video. *Notice the bus saying 'Denniz St.'* I love this video and we beeter make it number 1 on Mon.! GO BACKSTREET!

How would you describe the video for "Show Me The Meaning Of Being Lonely"?

Personally, I would say: Touching reality, emotional work for the Backstreet Boys.

For those who know EVERYTHING about the members, you have probably noticed that each scene is related to a real part of their lives. Let me tell you what I mean.

At the beginning, you see Brian standing in front of the window of an hospital room. Later on, you see HIM as the patient... Relation: Brian's heart surgery.

Then you see A.J. in a bus looking at the photograph of a girl. He seems to see her in the bus too. Relation: A.J. lost a girl friend in a car accident when he was 14.

While Kevin sings, you can see a family video, showing a father and his son. Who are those 2? Kevin himself and his beloved father. Relation: Kevin's dad died from cancer in 1991.

For Howie, it's simple, the relation is about is sister Caroline, died from Lupus in 1998.

Back to A.J., when he gets out of the bus, you can see "DENNIZ ST" on it. Denniz, spelt like for DENNIZ POP, a pop songwriter dead from cancer in 1998.

As for Nick, seriously I have no hints on what it shows us. I don't know anything about Nick that could mean a lost in his life.

Next time you'll see the video, take the time to think of the ones you lost...

In the early hours of the new millennium, Much Music aired the new BsB video. As I watched it, I thought that is was the saddest clip that they ever did. It's been on my mind ever since I saw it. Are their lives that sad? Is there little happiness that comes from those "Gods"? Is this how they see life??. Many questions came into light. If anyone agrees with me, let me know.

Thanks

Okay, let me start off by saying that I had an idea of what I wanted the video to look like. I had the plot, ideas, wardrobe, EVERYTHING in my head, and I wanted to send in my suggestion but I didn't. Now I wish I had.

I'm not saying that the video is bad. No, not at all. I was just hoping for a little something more. I want to know what on Earth was going no with Nick. I love the boy and he looked very good in the video (even with the hat, it took a few minutes to get used to), but what was his story? Kevin said each of them has their own story, but what was Nick's?

And what was Brian's? Do NOT tell me that I was not paying attention to the video! I was, in fact I watched it several times. Is he supposed to be his own ghost, watching himself die? Or is he lonely because he's going to heaven and is afraid of leaving those behind? And if he is a ghost, why the heck is he walking with the other members at the end of the video, cuz they're not ghosts!

Kevin's, I get, sorta. Well, yes, I get it and I like his story. It was the only one that I got right away. His dad, awww, that's so sad...he looked like he was gonna cry right then and there. I wanted to cry though, only then though.

Howie's sitting in a diner with coffee and he's sad. Okay. He's singing the blues to the air. Okay. A girl who looks like she's a big wave of red comes drifting to him looking like some bloody ghost out of a horror movie. Not okay. I just don't even wanna get into it.

AJ baby...okay...let's see. He's on a bus and he's missing his girl who he thinks gets on the bus but it's an illusion cuz he's missing her THAT MUCH. But then she melts away. Okay, I get it, but what I don't get is him getting off the bus singing. Who does that? And the melodramatics with the hat and looking out into the street had me laughing. Sorry AJ honey, I REALLY love you, but that looked so scripted to me.

Why are they all walking at the end? Are they journeying onto life where they have overcome their loneliness? Cuz it looks like the world after Judgment Day to me. It's the part of the video that has the most beautiful color but it made me go "HUH?" cuz I didn't know what was supposed to be going on.

Okay, now I know you're wondering why I said that I didn't hate the video when it seems as though I did. Well, I just think it could have been better. A clearer plot or something. But it was beautifully shot. I was thinking that the video would be in black and white with only red as the color clearly displayed and that happened, that was good. The scenes, imagery, and skillful use of technology were great. It was a beautifully shot video. And I will watch it again, just not with the same anticipation as I do with the other videos. I love the Boys all the same though. Even more because they did a collaboration with the director in this video, which is more than I can say for other artists who are like puppets on strings. Not our Boys. They're quality and that's why we love them.

-Kristen
