Teen Ad Collectors Demand - and Get - Backstreet Boys Milk Mustache Ad

Teens Are Scrambling to Have a Hip, Healthy Sip on the Lip

CHICAGO--(ENTERTAINMENT WIRE)--April 19, 1999--Whomever said ``mustaches'' went out with the seventies should take a look around. Designed to teach teens to drink more milk, the celebrity Milk Mustache ads are now being plastered across bedroom walls, inside lockers and in photo albums as the hottest collecting craze to hit teens nationwide.

Yes, these hip, recognizable Milk Mustache portraits have officially made milk drinking cool with their pop culture status. In fact, teen trendsetters pushed the Milk Mustache Book (Random House, 1998) to number five on The New York Times business paperback bestseller list. Young fans of the campaign continue to rack up 2,000 e-mails each day to the official Milk Web site (www.whymilk.com) in search of the latest ads to help complete their collections.

Teens Speak Up On What's Cool

From stars like Jennifer Love Hewitt and the cast of ``Frasier'' to athletes like Mark McGwire and Tony Hawk, the campaign has had a variety of celebrities in the ads - and teens continue to influence who dons a `stache. ``Denver Broncos quarterback John Elway and actor/director Ron Howard have both told us their ad-collecting daughters influenced their decision to appear in a Milk Mustache ad,'' says Kurt Graetzer, chief executive officer of the Milk Processor Education Program. ``The popularity of the campaign is really helping us move the needle toward getting teens to drink more milk for the calcium they need.''

The latest to-die-for Milk Mustache celebs asked for by teens nationwide are the Grammy-nominated Backstreet Boys. The Backstreet Boys ad copy encourages teens to build strong bones: ``Fifteen percent of adult height is added during teen years. So we give our growing bones lots of calcium by drinking milk. How do you think we reach all those high notes, anyway?''

``Being a relatively new band, we think it's cool that our Milk Mustache ad is such a hot commodity among our fans and we're glad to help promote the importance of milk,'' said Kevin Richardson, a member of the Backstreet Boys. ``We're honored to be the number one band teens wanted to see in a Milk Mustache ad.''

Teen Calcium Crisis

Teens aren't the only ones who love Milk Mustache ad collecting. Parents and health professionals are excited that kids are picking up on the message the ads promote - that drinking milk is a fun and healthy way to help ensure that teens don't miss out on important nutrients. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, nearly nine out of 10 teen girls and seven out of 10 teen boys fail to get enough calcium in their diets. On average, teenage girls drink less than one glass of milk a day - just one of the reasons why leading health organizations are urging teens to drink more milk more often.

Milk Misperceptions Among Teens

In the past, some dieting teens turned to nutrient-vacant diet sodas as their beverage of choice, however, nutritionists agree that fat free milk is a better way to cut calories, without cutting valuable nutrients. Fat free milk has the same amount of calcium and eight other essential nutrients as whole milk with no fat and 80 calories - about the same calories as a medium apple.

Teens state the Milk Mustache ads have encouraged them to drink milk more often. ``Seeing the celebrities in the ads does remind me to drink milk,'' says Monicka Rudolph, avid teen collector. ``Sometimes when I'm watching TV, I get a taste for a soda, but think that I should probably drink milk.''

Calcium Curriculum Makes A Difference

The Milk Mustache campaign is also paying off in the classroom. In fact, results of a recent study by Wirthlin Worldwide show that when you bring the Milk Mustache celebrities into the classroom to help teach bone health, teens relate. After watching and learning ``A Crash Course on Calcium'' video and lesson plan, the number of teens who reported drinking milk every day increased by 11 percent, while the number of teens who drank soft drinks every day dropped.

A series of educational brochures for consumers is available by calling 1-800-WHY-MILK or by visiting the milk Web site at http://www.whymilk.com.
