Leftovers from the Boys

More from my lunch with the Backstreet Boys: Kevin Richardson called 1998 ``the most successful but hardest year'' the group has had. ``We had to handle a lot of business and grow up a lot,'' said Richardson, referring to the legal disputes and split with longtime manager Johnny Wright. ``But we've surrounded ourselves with positive energy.''

So far, even though the group's next album, to be released May 18, is called Millennium, the Boys don't have a concert slated for Dec. 31, 1999. The upcoming world tour that kicks off in June will be ``in the round - with the stage in the middle.''

They kept him in stitches

Richardson talked about his dance lessons, and how he wanted to be a pilot but didn't have the math skills. Richardson never wore braces or glasses as a youngster, but he had more than his share of stitches. ``I had two big brothers, and we used to live on a farm,'' Richardson said. ``We'd play tackle football on concrete, have rock fights and bottle-rocket fights, using garbage-can lids for shields - crazy stuff.''

Gag king has grown up

Nick Carter says he's ``grown up a little bit'' since the Orlando-based group first formed. ``I started in the group when I was 12 to 13. Now I'm 19 - there's a big difference. I'm a lot more mature. When I was younger, I had a tendency to really annoy the guys a lot. I still have that tendency, but I was the King of Spencer's [the gag-gift store]. ``I would go in there and stick stuff in their food.'' Candy that tastes like fish, anyone?

When the boys met, Kentucky native Brian Littrell was a ``country bumpkin'' with a thick accent, Carter said. Kevin ``is still the same guy - a rock.''
