Our special-guest Music-issue mom is Denise McLean, mother of Backstreet Boy A.J. Q: What do you do when your boyfriend's mother hates you? I really love my boyfriend, but his mom sure doesn't love me. I've tried bringing gifts, like a bottle of wine or flowers, when we go to her house for dinner, but I just can't seem to win her over.--Lisa, Terre Haute, Ind. A: Hate is a very strong word. You have to understand a mother's view: She is instinctively very protective of her son, as a father is of his daughter. This is a fact of life that no person really understands until she has children of her own. Take something you love and would fight for to the end, multiply that by about 100, and this is how a parent feels about a child. It's like when you were little and were about to get a baby brother or sister. Just as your impending sibling became a threat to you, you have now become a threat to your boyfriend's mother. So what you are calling hate is really jealousy. How do you overcome this? Try to make his mother understand that you are not a treat, and you would like to be a friend. Trying to win her over with gifts is fine, but most people view this as fake and insincere. Honesty is the best policy. Take his mom to lunch--just the two of you--and tell her how you feel. Hopefully, she'll begin to open up to you. Getting this out of the way in the beginning of the relationship will probably help to put a positive twist on its future. It may even strengthen your relationship with your boyfriend, because his stress about having you and his mother in the same house will be lifted. Good luck! Comment on this item.
