2:00 p.m. Medical ICU

Caroline Cochran, a 37-year old computer operator, has passed out again. She has pulmonary hypertension, which dangerously increases pressure in the blood vessels linking her heart and lungs, leaving her at a high risk for blackouts, seizures, and heart attack. Her doctor prescribed Flolan, but she didn't respond well. She came to Duke early Thurdsay with difficulty in breathing. Since then, she has passed out several times and had a seizure. She is not a candidate for a heart-lung transplant because she has lupus, and there are few other options.

Cochran's brother, Howie Dorough of the musical group Backstreet Boys, flies in from California to see her and is by her side when her struggle for life finally ends eight hours later.
