- Date: Dec 19, 2001 2001: THE YEAR IN MUSIC POLL NO. 1 RECAP With 30% of a staggering 16,863 votes, the Backstreet Boys' Jive/Zomba album "Black and Blue" is the No. 1 album of 2001, according to a recently completed Billboard.com poll. The boy band's total doubled the next closest challenger, the Beatles' "1" (Apple/Capitol), which pulled in 15% of the vote. On the definitive year-end tally of The Billboard 200, "1" is the No. 1 album of the year, while "Black and Blue" officially finished at No. 3. Back on the poll, Alicia Keys' "Songs in A Minor" (J) and Linkin Park's "Hybrid Theory" (Warner Bros.) each tied with 10% of the vote, while Creed's "Human Clay" (Wind-Up) pulled in 8% of the vote. Destiny's Child's Columbia album "Survivor" netted 7%, with Nelly's "Country Grammar" (Fo' Reel/Universal) garnering 5&. Sade's Epic set "Lovers Rock" and Staind's "Break the Cycle" (Flip/Elektra/EEG) tied with 4%. Enya's Reprise collection "A Day Without Rain" grabbed 3%, and rap-rock act Limp Bizkit's "Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water" (Flip/Interscope) tied with Shaggy's MCA set "Hotshot" with 2% of the tally. Bringing up the rear were the two strong-selling and high-charting various artists compilations "NOW That's What I Call Music!, Vol. 6" and "Vol. 7," with 1% and less than 1%, respectively. Each of those albums was released through the cooperation of the Sony, Zomba, Universal, and EMI recording label groups.
