Canadian Charts: Backstreet Trumps Jackson, Good

Showbiz Big-deal releases by Michael Jackson, the Matthew Good Band, and Enrique Iglesias earned top five debuts on the Canadian album chart, but still took a back seat to Backstreet. The number one debut on the Canadian album charts belonged to Backstreet Boys' "Greatest Hits -- Chapter 1," which sold 40,175 copies in its first week of release. Second place went to Enrique Iglesias's "Escape," which debuted at #2 with 36,414 copies sold. Jackson's hyped comeback attempt "Invincible" debuted in third place with 28,122 copies sold. It was followed closely by MGB's "The Audio Of Being," which sold 24,696 and debuted in fourth. In our weekly Chart Battle, JAM! readers had incorrectly predicted, by a margin of 67%, that Good would prevail over Jackson. Meanwhile, the "Now! 6" compilation (16,340) slid from second to fifth, while Enya's durable "A Day Without Rain" (15,605) was pushed down two to sixth. Nickelback's "Silver Side Up" fell one to seventh, and Diana Krall's "The Look Of Love" (12,341) dropped three to eighth. Lenny Kravitz's "Lenny" (12,044) debuted in ninth and DMX's "The Great Depression" (11,311) parachuted from first-place last week to rest at #10 this week. Outside the top 10, Jann Arden's "Greatest Hurts" debuted at #13; the "Artists Against Aids" compilation debuted at #46; and Destiny's Child seasonal release "8 Days Of Christmas" entered at #81. In the U.S., the results were significantly different. Jackson's "Invincible" debuted at #1, selling 366,272 copies, followed by Iglesias's "Escape," which sold 267,301. DMX's "The Great Depression" (213,780) fell from first to third, while the Backstreet Boys' best-of sold 197,391, good enough for fourth.
