- Date: Oct 02, 2001 Backstreet Boys help raise Lupus awareness in B.C. kicking off Lupus Awareness Month VANCOUVER, Sept. 28 /CNW/ - When the Backstreet Boys perform in Vancouver on October 1st, they will sing for more than just fans. They will again help raise awareness of Lupus - an auto-immune disease that affects more than 50- thousand Canadians. In 1998 Backstreet Boy Howie Dorough lost his sister to Lupus and now wants to increase awareness about this disease. For a second time the B.C. Lupus Society will attend the concert and educate fans about the disease, coinciding with the October kick off of Lupus Awareness Month in Canada. Fan education is important as lupus is often diagnosed in the teen years and 9 out of 10 people with lupus are female. Lupus is often difficult to diagnose, and can affect any organ or system in the body. Inflammation is caused when the immune system mistakenly attacks the body's own healthy tissues, producing lupus symptoms. The B.C. Lupus Society is a registered non-profit organization with 41 Chapters and support groups across B.C.
