'What's Going On' Proceeds To Share With Terror-Relief Fund

- Date: Sep 26, 2001 The remake of Marvin Gaye's classic 1974 song "What's Going On" recorded two weeks ago to benefit worldwide AIDS-relief organizations will now share its proceeds with the September 11th Fund, set up to assist victims of September 11's terrorist attacks. Artists who contributed to the track include the Backstreet Boys, U2's Bono, R.E.M.'s Michael Stipe, Jennifer Lopez, Destiny's Child, *NSYNC, P. Diddy, Christina Aguilera, Alicia Keys, Britney Spears, No Doubt's Gwen Stefani,Wyclef Jean, Mary J. Blige, Limp Bizkit's Fred Durst, the Roots' Amir, Eve, Nelly Furtado, Savage Garden's Darren Hayes, Ja Rule, Staind's Aaron Lewis, Nas, Nelly, Lil' Kim, Jermaine Dupri, and Nona Gaye, Marvin's daughter. A press release from Columbia Records stated: "In the wake of the tragic terrorist attacks on the United States on September 11, Artists Against AIDS Worldwide, realizing the recording's powerful healing message extended beyond the scope of the project's original aim, decided to donate 50 percent of its proceeds to the United Way's September 11th Fund and 50 percent to the AIDS relief effort, which includes the Global AIDS Alliance, among others." Five different mixes of the song appear on the CD single, which was made available to radio stations nationwide on Friday (September 21) and will be commercially available October 23.
