- ![]() Date: Feb 23, 2001 The Backstreet Boys web series is apparently facing crippling financial difficulties after the company running the superhero cartoons filed for bankruptcy protection on Friday. According to Reuters Stan Lee Media which is also behind the Mary J Blige superhero web series, filed for a Chapter 11 protection order. The company stated that it is planning to look at offers from buyers interested in revitalisting the company or acquiring assets. The BSB animated series was the brainchild of youngest group member Nick Carter whose artistic talents have helped fill stretches of boredom during the band's hectic touring schedules and gruelling promotional trips. Carter had been creating characters based on him and his four bandmates since the early days of the American supergroup and approached Stan Lee with his roughs. The cartoon strip featuring the band as the superhuman Cyber Crusaders first made an appearance as a comic book in February 2000 before the first of 22 web adventures launched on 27 August 2000 in a whirl or publicity. It was hoped that the series would later develop into a TV series but only seven of the planned 22 webisodes have been previewed to date and there are no further plans to develop the project in the future. The internet entertainment company founded by the Marvel Comics creator behind Spiderman and the Incredible Hulk closed its doors in December when staff were laid off after the company failed to raise $2.2 million in a bridging loan. Financial problems are not the company's only concerns as it is being investigated by the Securities and Exchange Commission over allegations of misuse of company funds by some former managers. It is also facing a possible lawsuit from an investment bank.
