Pop stars to help school keep teachers

Statewire

REDFORD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) -- A popular boy band may help save the jobs of some local teachers.

Jive Records, the recording label for The BackstreetBoys, is giving away two trips to the group' s concert in Minneapolis next month -- complete with backstage passes -- to help keep 13 Redford Union teachers from being laid off.

Faced with declining enrollment and a $1.5 million deficit, the district announced in November that teachers and other staffers would be laid off after the semester that ended Friday.

The parents have been holding fund-raisers with a $350, 000 goal, but it may be too late to save the educators' jobs.

Some late help has come from a local radio personality, DJ Tic Tak, who hosts an evening show on WDRQ-FM and made an on-air plea for help Thursday.

After Tic Tak made his announcement, the station was flooded with phone calls from listeners offering help.

A Jive Records executive kicked in two front-row tickets to a Feb. 17 BackstreetBoys concert in Minneapolis. The record company will provide airfare and hotel accommodations, along with backstage passes for visits with the band after the concert. WDRQ is raffling off the package; tickets are $100 each.

The radio station will announce the winner Monday at midnight.
