- ![]() Date: Nov 22, 2000 By Christian Boone Wu-Tang Clan, Erykah Badu, Everclear, Nine Inch Nails also releasing new discs Tuesday. Expect no recounts of sales totals for Tuesday's new releases. In fact, you can pretty much bank on the winner in this race, as the Backstreet Boys' third album will hit stores amid much-hyped expectations. New albums by the Wu-Tang Clan, Erykah Badu and Everclear also will also be released this week. But it's the battle of Orlando that's grabbing all the attention, as a seemingly insatiable teen pop market awaits the Boys' Black & Blue. The album's first single, "Shape of My Heart," has already cracked the top 10 of the Billboad Hot 100 singles chart. BSB are in the midst of a worldwide promotional tour with their eyes on *NSync's record of 2.4 million units in first-week sales. "What we do is very poppy at times, and then there's part of us that's very noisy." — Everclear's Art Alexias Backstreet's strategy to return to the top of the boy band hierarchy relies on familiarity, compiling a mix of uptempo dance songs and ballads heavy on the syrup. Tracks include "Get Another Boyfriend," "I Promise You (With Everything I Am)" and "How Did I Fall in Love With You." Perhaps most importantly, the Boys reunited with Swedish producer Max Martin, who has been a studio fixture on all three albums. For those looking for something completely different, the Wu-Tang Clan will release The W, featuring a few previously recorded rhymes by fugitive rapper Ol' Dirty Bastard. "Gravel Pit" and "Protect Ya Neck (The Jump Off)" have both been released as singles. The W features guest appearances by Snoop Dogg, Nas, Busta Rhymes, Redman, Junior Reid and Isaac Hayes. Badu's follow-up to Baduizm boasts the single "Bag Lady," which has been #1 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks chart for the past four weeks. Everclear's ambitious year concludes with Songs From an American Movie Vol. II/A Good Time for a Bad Attitude. As the title reflects, the band is returning to a harder sound after indulging their pop fancy on Songs From an American Movie Vol. I/Learning How to Smile, released this summer. "What we do is very poppy at times, and then there's part of us that's very noisy," singer Art Alexias said of the new album, which features the single "When It All Goes Wrong Again." Nine Inch Nails have given a remix once-over to The Fragile (1999) on Things Fall Apart. The EP includes three versions of "Starfuckers, Inc.," Trent Reznor's bloody valentine to Courtney Love, as well as a previously unreleased cover of Gary Numan's "Metal." Electronica heavyweights the Chemical Brothers will release Music: Response, a special U.S. EP featuring live music from their Surrender (1999) tour. Oasis also have a live album in stores Tuesday, although the band may not be quite as Familiar to Millions as they were a few years ago. The album, recorded at London's Wembley Arena, includes the hits "Wonderwall," "Champagne Supernova" and a new version of "Cigarettes and Alcohol." Finally, the seemingly endless musical library of Tupac Shakur yields yet another posthumous release, The Rose That Grew From Concrete, based on his collection of poems and essays. The CD boasts several high-profile guests, including Mos Def ("Can U C the Pride in the Panther"), Q-Tip ("The Fear in the Heart of Man") and Dead Prez ("U R Ripping Us Apart").
