It's the battle of the boy bands, part two. The Backstreet Boys will rev up the hormone-crazed teenage world when their new album, "Black & Blue," hits record stores at midnight tonight.

The follow-up to 1999's "Millennium," which has sold 11.3 million copies and garnered five Grammy nominations, will be closely watched to see if it will break Jive labelmate *NSYNC's record for first- week sales.

*NSYNC's "No Strings Attached" sold 2.42 million copies its first week out, and has now sold 8.5 million copies. The previ ous first-week record, held by the Back street Boys for "Millennium," was 1.13 million.

The Orlando-based band is doing every thing to set up a record-breaker.

On Friday, the band embarked on a "Round the World in 100 Hours" global album launch, departing from Stockholm, it will travel 26,000 miles and touch down on six continents, with the finale in Times Square tomorrow, all being filmed by MTV.

"They stand a better chance than any one else at breaking this record," says Rolling Stone's music editor Joe Levy. "They certainly want to break *NSYNC's record."

Records stores have pre-ordered be tween 5 million and 6 millions copies of the album, an unheard of figure, just in case the sales match the hype.

Sell 2 million albums in the first week, as *NSYNC did, is an "achievement we shouldn't expect too often," says Bill board's chart guru Geoff Mayfield.

Dave Montes, operations manager for Tower Records downtown, said it will be tough for Backstreet to beat their label mates. "There's a lot of stuff out there right now fighting for the same audience," he says.
