Today is the worlwide release of the new Backstreet Boys album 'Black & Blue'. With their new CD, the five boys, who have matured in the meantime, want to prove that they have blossomed out and turned into a group that ought to be taken seriously. "It's probably the most diverse album we have ever made, ever recorded," says Brian Littrel about their latest oeuvre. "We're hoping everybody enjoys it and loves it." The Swedish producer Max Martin, who is also creatively active for Britney Spears and 'NSYNC, has long become part of the Backstreet Boys' family. This time, he and the boys worked together on the songs in Orlando, New York, Stockholm and London.

Even though the five are not really considered to be full-blooded musicians, they have added to the songs with their creativity. "We did a little more writing on this, as well as producing on it and it's a little more real," explains Brian. For Nick, the sound of 'Black & Blue' is a bit too sad and dark but the texts are along the lines of their traditional topics: love, heart and pain. Besides 'Shape Of My Heart', the ballads 'I Promise You' and 'Time' will once again melt the hearts of female teens around the world. 'Black & Blue' won't dissappoint their fans. If it says BSB, that's what you'll get!

Previous hits have proven that the boys are reliable. With songs like 'I want It That Way', 'Show Me The Meaning Of Being Lonely' and 'Larger Than Life', the boys had one hit after the other. Their last album 'Millennium' sold itself over 1.3 million times within the first week and their tours around the globe are always sold out. They reign the charts with a certain regularity.

To Howie D., the figures are not that important: "We don't want to get so caught up with breaking each record we had with the previous album sales. I mean, 'cause it's just about us, it's just making good music, for us and our fans."

What lies behind this phenomenon of the boys, who aren't musicians with all their heart and soul but are yet so successful?

According to AJ: Hard work and a fair amount of self-criticism.

"It's like we just keep on trying to better ourselves while we're just trying to do better than we did last time. So we'll gonna be our worst, you know, critics about whatever we do." Thus, it's their greatest wish to be taken seriously as a singing group and not not to be considered as 'merely' a boy group. Isn't it fateful that the heroes from the front cover of Bravo have become successful with the exact image they are now trying to shake off?
