Showbiz BACK ON TOP: As predicted here in ChartTalk a few weeks ago, Backstreet Boys score their fifth No. 1 on The Hits as "Shape Of My Heart" finally makes that one-position climb to the top. Considering its recent record-breaking No. 3 debut, the song's ascent to No. 1 took rather long; seven weeks in total (its chart run to date: 3-4-3-4-3-2-1). To refresh your memory, BSB first hit the top of The Hits in 1998 with "As Long As You Love Me." That was later followed by three other chart-toppers from the "Millennium" album: "I Want It That Way" (1999), "Larger Than Life" (1999) and "Show Me The Meaning Of Being Lonely" (2000). Meanwhile, "Shape Of My Heart" holds at No. 1 on the SoundScan singles chart for the third week. That matches the No. 1 stay of the Florida band's other SoundScan chart-topper, "I Want It That Way." Will Ricky Martin, who rockets 7-2 with "She Bangs," bang on the door of the chart penthouse next week? If history repeats itself, he has a chance. In the spring of 1999, BSB was at the top for three weeks with the aforementioned "I Want It That Way" until it gave way to Martin’s "Livin' La Vida Loca." Expect more Backstreet Boys news in two weeks; time when the group's latest "Black & Blue" is expected to enter the SoundScan album chart at No. 1. If it does that'll make it four out of four for the Boys, that is, all of their four albums will have reached the top. Backstreet Boys top new CD releases By PAUL CANTIN Senior Reporter, JAM! Showbiz Relative newcomers Backstreet Boys and Everclear will duke it out with old-guard icons Elton John and Pink Floyd in this week's new record releases. John releases career-spanning live sets and Pink Floyd has a classic album remastered and reissued on CD this week, while Everclear and Backstreet Boys move forward with sets of new material. Here's a closer look at the new releases for the the week of Nov. 21. BACKSTREET BOYS "Black And Blue" (Jive) -- Anyone who thinks the see-sawing election between George W. Bush and Al Gore is the hottest popularity contest on the continent obviously hasn't been following the rivalry between *NSync and Backstreet Boys. To Backstreet's most fanatical devotees, it's not enough that they make another reasonable record of innocuous dance pop. The real mission is to sell records in record-breaking quantities -- enough to vanquish *NSync's impressive sales figures and prove, once and for all, who is the reigning champion of popdom. Titles include "The Call" (which is available for download at their website (www.backstreetboys.com), the current single "Shape Of My Heart" and "Get Another Boyfriend." Comment on this item.
