Date: Jan 07, 2001 Nick How did the round the world trip go? It was absolutely fantastic! It was really hard work, but there's no doubt in all of our minds that it was worth it. One of the best bits about it as far as I was concerned, was that we even got to go to a couple of places we've never visited before, which was great. We saw Cape Town and Rio, they were both really interesting! Unfortunately we didn't have much time to look around. Were you completey knackered? Oh yes! We were exhausted by the end of it! Luckily we had Thanksgiving weekend right after the tour had finished, so we got some rest then. But it didn't last long - we're back working now, rehearsing for the tour, which we're really excited about. Why were you hanging out with Melissa Joan Hart in Sydney? She's been a friend of mine for quite a while, we get on really well, and when we were out in Australia, we bumped into her. She was out there filming and it was a really nice surprise to see her there! Have you been getting much drum practice in? Sadly, I haven't been practising as much as I'd like recently. Once we get back on the road I'll get a chance to be around more musicians, and that really helps. Howie mentioned you'd put a rock band together - how's it going? Well I was working with a band - but I'm not actually in it! It's just a group I'm working with. It's going fine, no real news with a single or anything! I'll keep y'all posted! What was the last concert you went to? Awww, it was great - I went to see my brother, Aaron's show at an American event called the Wesbury Music Fair. He had no idea I was coming along, so it was all a big surprise, which was nice! I try and go to concerts as much as I can, but it's difficult... Do you get hassled when you go to see other artists? That's part of the problem of going to concerts, really. I guess it's one of the reasons I don't see as many as I'd like. I do get hassled even though I try to be low key as much as possible. It's just really hard to relax, because I alwasy feel like people are watching me, which can be a little creepy sometimes. What's in your CD player at the moment? It's a compilation of songs from the 80s which is my favourite period for music. The one I'm listening to right now is by a band called Men At Work, who are from Australia. I love that kind of thing! Do you make up your own mini-discs/tapes? I'd love to say I did, but usually I just buy finished ones. I used to when I was younger, and had more time, but not any more! If I did make one, it'd be an ultimate 80s mixture - that'd be perfect! When was the last time you went into a record shop? I remember this exactly - it was last year, on Nov 21, right when B&B came out in the states. We were in NY doing a press conference, and when it was over we surprised everyone by walking right into Virgin Records on Broadway to check out our new CD! The staff and all the customers completely freaked out 'caus it was totally unplanned! It was mayhem! We've heard you've recently bought a house? Yeah it was about 4 months ago, I moved to the Keys. It's a lovely house right on the ocean, and I'm so excited that I've got a real home finally sorted out. It's my dream place. It has its own private beach so I can go out on my boat whenever I'm home. Have you had a chance to decorate it yet? No I've only been back home a few times since I bought it. My mum does all that kind of stuff! I didn't even pick the colours or anything. I just left it all up to her, she's got good taste. Have you had much time to hang out in it yet? Acually, I've been really lucky and had a fair bit of time over the last year or so - it's been great! But that's all going to change with the upcoming tour! I'll have to say farewell to lounging out around the house for a while! But it'll be worth it... You've been talking about it for yonks, but will you ever record with Aaron? Well, to be honest, Aaron's doing pretty well without me! But you never know do you? I guess I would like to one day. Have you got yourself a new girlfriend yet? No, right now I am concentrating 100% on my music, the tour, and the whole of my career. But again, you just never know when you might meet someone special, so even though I'm not looking, I can't say anything for definite. Do you miss having someone to go home to or phone up when you're down? Of course I do but I have friends outside the group who I'm close to, which makes me feel really lucky. Plus the other guys are the people I'm closest to, since we've pretty much grown up together. I'm not saying it wouldn't be nice to have a girlfriend, just that I have plenty of good friends I can talk to. When was your last nigh out with 'the lads'? We had a lot of nights out during our last trip to Europe - particularly the night out we had after the MTV Europe Awards in Stockholm. Now that was a party! (Laughs for about a decade!) You seem to have really matured recently, are you happier with the Nick Carter you are now than, say, 2 years ago? I think everyone gets a little more comfortable with themselves as they get older, and yes, I think that's true of me, too. Still I know it's not a normal life I lead, and although I am happy within myself, there are bits of my life that I am still unsure of . Like sometimes I love the attention I get, other times I hate it, if you know what I mean? What was the last thing that had you rolling around laughing? One of our security guys has always sworn that he would never, ever dance with us in a club, and recently we finally made him do it! We were all just cracking up, but I guess you had to be there! What one tip would you give a 12/13 year old who was considering joining a band? I'd just tell him to be sure he looks after himself. I got pushed around a bit when I was younger. Thankfully I've learned that you don't have to let anyone take advantage of you and it's all ok now. But you've got to watch that when you're younger. Now you're one of the world's biggest groups do you travel around in your own private BSB jet? Why waste all that money? It's way too expensive and we don't need to do that, when we're going on long flights we just travel business class or first class just so we can rest! Brian So how do you feel being a married man? Marriage is great! My parents have been married for almost 30 years. They've had a relationship where they're never apart - I believe I've reached that step in my life, where I need to complete myself. I've got a very beautiful wife, and I'm really enjoying married life! What song was your first dance at your wedding to ? It was called I Do That, it's a bit country, but it has a lot of crossover potential. Maybe you'll hear it on a BSB album one day! I also wrote a song called You Are for Leighanne and performed it - but you'll probably never hear it again - maybe on my solo album one day! Did you watch Making the Band? I watched about 5 minutes of it and turned it off. I couldn't watch it. I don't share any of those memories with what they made of the show. They made our business out to be childish - it's a montage of something that never took place. They're making a mockery of what I do for a living and that saddens me. I think it's a little bit to do with bad feeling of previous managers and people who had prior involvement with us. What's this about you starting a label? Yeah, we're starting a label, although we' don't have a name for it yet. Respect is hard to come by in this business, cos there are people who make a show of how you were put together. There are so many different elements in the making of a boy band and to be honest, it's a curse. So with our label we plan to take the respect back to where the respect is due and that's why we're giving everyone an opportunity, we only want very talented vocalists and entertainers. So tell us about your artists... Well the first one's a girl called Krystal, and she's amazing. She can sing like a songbird! Hopefully she'll be opening up for us on our tour. We plan to treat her right, like we wish we'd been treated from the beginning. It's pretty sad what they do to you in the record business, but we've stood the test of time! We're still here and looking forward to even more... AJ Are you enjoying being the centre of attention? I don't know many guys that wouldn't like the attention from girls! I definitely do! But we're not always the centre of attention, you know. It's not like that all the time. In fact I still feel like we live a reasonably normal life, although when people live with us they say "Is this what is real to you?" I think it's kind of abnormal to other people Would you buy your own album? I probably would cos a lot of the songs on the albums are very versatile and can be played when you are in different moods. If you are a very moody person then they'd be good albums. There's always a perfect song for every situation, which is what makes the album so good. What would it take for someone to be thrown out of BSB? It would take them to be very dishonest and to be too much of a loose connon. I used to be like that I guess. I was the Robbie of the band for a while but I changed. If you were an overall freak and a problem, and you were dishonest you weren't doing your job, you weren't coming to work on time and didn't care, there would be no point in you staying in the band. Drugs are a big thing too. If someone did drugs then he would be out. Do you still remember the very first autograph that you signed? I don't remember the first autograph that I signed but I remember the first piece of fanmail that I got. We had done a show in Oregon and there was a girl in the audience that liked me. She was the first girl who wrote to the fanclub. I wanted to keep it and frame it, but I lost it in my lovely messy room which is a real shame. Have you ever said anything hurtful to the others that you regretted? I didn't say anthing hurtful but I did something hurtful to Nick. We had a bit of a fight once. We were over at Kevin's apartment and Nick was makign fun of me. I just couldn't take it, so I grabbed one of his comic books and held a match to it. I didn't actually light it but I was going to. We got into a fight over it. But we sorted it out not long afterwards. Kevin Do you ever feel you don't have enough free time? Sometimes, but that's just the sacrifice that you have to make. I can assure you that the busy schedule is well worlth the good bits of our job. Plus, as we've become more established we have been able to grab as few more days here and there. Not many but it does make a difference! Anyway I don't believe there is a job where everything's perfect. There are good and bad bits in every job. Do you ever get bored of performing old songs? Sometimes they can lose their freshness yes, but only if you let them. It's just something that you have to work on as a performer. You always have to make it seem like it is the first time you stepped on stage, which can be tough but that is part of the challenge of being a performer. Do you feel like you are in control of your life? Sometimes I do and sometimes I don't. It's not really a bad thing. When I get panicky about that kind of thing that will be the time to re-evaluate a few things in my life! As far as groups go do you think that you are a nice bunch? (Smiles) Yeah we are some nice guys! How saucy do you get on stage? That is something that I am getting more open about. I am not normally the sort of person that is very open about that kind of thing. I don't try and be sexy on stage. If it doesn't come naturaly to me then I won't try to do it. There was one song that I used to sing on stage... I would have an open shirt and I wold be standing on a grid and a fan would come on and blow my shirt about the place. But that's about as sexy as I get. While I am up there, though, I don't feel like me. I feel like someone else. How do you calm down when you are angry? I'll either just go and be by myself or just talk it out with someone. I won't bottle it up though. I absolutely have to get it out. If I was angry with someone then I would try and talk it out with them, I don't like friction. If there is something wrong then I like to clear the air. Howie Do you still remember the first autograph you signed? When I was in high school I did Unchained Melody at a talent show. Everyone said I should do it for more shows. So I started doing it to represent the choir. The school then hired me out to do parties and functions for them! Afterwards I would be signing autographs so that was my early taster! If you were out and you met a girl would you tell her what you did? I tell people I am in the entertainment business. If people recognise me then I am kind of standoffish about telling them about the group. I'm not embarrassed about it but I never want to try and use it to my advantage. Have you changed? The only thing I've learned to do is say what's on my mind. Before I was always hesitant to say anyting cos I thougth that people would think that I was too outspoken and I wanted to avoid confrontation. Now I have learned that you have sometimes got to please yourself. Would you say that you are a good flirt? I guess all of us can be flirts at some time! I guess you have to ask the girls! I try every now and again to see if I have still got it, heh-heh! Have you ever snogged to one of your records? We perform our songs every day so I don't really listen to them when I am at home. When you perform them everyday they're the last thing that you want to hear when you get back to your room! If it came on at a disco we would run onto the dancefloor though. Sometimes we'll do a little bit of the routine as well! What do the other guys in the band take the mickey out of you about? Probably that I am so particular with my hair and stuff. Are you happy? Yeah, this is where I would have liked to be- not that I ever expected it. As an entertainer though I am always straining to reach better goals, not out of greediness but just to be the best that I can be.
